Friday Extra Show: back to 2012

Extra podcast edition

Chris and Scott had settled into a new Friday routine.

Rather than simply repeat the week, they opened the archive.

This edition went back to 2012.

Scott admitted large parts of the year had disappeared from his memory.

The clips proved the show had been doing exactly the kind of strange radio it still enjoyed.

Scott was obsessed with Mob Wives

One archive feature began with Scott explaining his love for the American reality programme Mob Wives.

The series followed women with family or relationship connections to organised crime around Staten Island.

Scott loved the dramatic arguments, fur coats, lunches and enormous fights.

He had even ordered the programme on DVD from America and followed the cast online.

When one of the stars wished him happy birthday, Scott treated the message as though he had genuinely been accepted by the mob.

Chris thought he might be missing the point of organised crime.

The mafia-name generator found Scotty the Fish

The show then used an online mob-name generator.

Scott tried several possibilities.

Two Finger Scotty.

Big Scotty the Boss.

Scotty Nostrils.

The clear winner was:

Scotty the Fish.

Scott liked the name enough for it to survive into the title of the 2019 archive podcast.

The absurdity was exactly why the Friday format worked.

A seven-year-old throwaway website joke could suddenly return as though it had always been important show history.

One Xtra apparently had a documentary about larger rappers

Another archive clip involved a One Xtra documentary which the presenters described as being about larger-framed rappers.

Scott initially thought Chris was inventing it.

The conversation included an interview with a rapper discussing how weight loss had improved his energy and live performance.

One moment sounded as though the interviewee might have been speaking while using the toilet.

Scott and Chris became fascinated by the ordinary bodily logistics behind a serious recorded interview.

The title’s rapper on the loo came from exactly that kind of accidental archive detail.

“What Would the Hoff Do?” returned too

The 2012 material also revisited What Would the Hoff Do?, where David Hasselhoff was asked to advise listeners on dilemmas.

The fact Scott and Chris could once telephone David Hasselhoff and ask him about club toilets, aftershave or relationship problems felt almost unreal years later.

The Friday archive was becoming less a “best of” and more a reminder of just how many strange premises the show had accumulated.
