Taylor Swift took over the afternoon
Scott described the booking as one of the biggest interviews the show had ever had.
Listeners around the world were waiting.
Several long-term Taylor Swift fans called before the interview to explain why the new single “ME!” and her return to interviews felt significant.
One fan had followed Taylor for more than a decade and said the appeal was not only the music but the way Taylor communicated with fans.
Scott could feel the pressure building.
Then, shortly before the recorded conversation, there was confusion over the timing and he had to prepare much faster than expected.
That probably contributed to what happened next.
Taylor was happy to lose to Stormzy
During the interview, Scott talked about the very close UK chart race between Taylor and Stormzy.
Taylor’s answer was generous.
She said she loved Stormzy and would happily lose the number one to him.
Scott also asked about the secrecy around new music and how much trusted people knew in advance.
Taylor explained that people close to her could be relied upon to keep things private.
The conversation was warm enough for Scott to relax.
Possibly too much.
Scott invited her to an event she was not playing
Near the end, Scott told Taylor:
“We’ll see you at Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Middlesbrough.”
Taylor reacted enthusiastically.
There was one problem.
She was not booked to play Big Weekend.
Scott somehow made the mistake twice.
Only after the interview did he properly process what he had said.
Chris could not understand why nobody had stopped him after the first time.
Scott worried that Taylor fans would now assume there was a secret appearance planned.
Radio 1 had to make it clear that there was not.
The mistake would continue haunting him for several weeks.
Morgan’s mum volunteered him for Where Do You Think They Were?
The day also brought another conception story.
Morgan, 20, from Edinburgh had not volunteered himself.
His mum Catherine had nominated him.
She enjoyed embarrassing her son and seemed delighted by the opportunity to do it nationally.
Morgan’s dad Graham joined too.
The parents had a shared story involving their early married life and camping.
Wild camping became the compromise
Graham liked wild camping.
Catherine did not.
The compromise was a more organised campsite.
The weather was bad enough for rain to become part of the memory.
The couple were inside a small tent with very thin walls and very little real privacy.
Scott asked whether there had even been sleeping bags involved.
Graham implied they were not especially important to what happened.
The couple had not really considered how much noise or movement a tent communicated to the surrounding campsite.
Morgan had now acquired the slightly uncomfortable title of camping baby.
Bastille brought new music too
Bastille also dropped into the programme with new music and discussed the album *Doom Days*.
The concept followed the course of a night out, moving through darker songs before ending on something more uplifting.
Scott liked that an album could effectively tell the emotional story of one night.
Thursday had started with Taylor Swift.
It still found room for Bastille and a conception story in a tent.
