23 December 2008: X Factor or Live Lounge tested Scott’s Christmas listening

Dear Scott opened with an unexpectedly hostile message

A letter initially sounded as though the writer strongly disliked the programme before a more affectionate version emerged. The team decided the insulting one felt more convincing, which said something about the relationship they expected to have with regular listeners.

X Factor or Live Lounge blurred polished and rough vocals

The Christmas quiz played singing clips and asked whether each had come from The X Factor or Radio 1’s Live Lounge. Beyoncé, Glasvegas and other recognisable artists made the challenge harder because an unusual arrangement or exposed vocal could sound very different from a studio single.

Smell My Cheese returned before Christmas

Bob Sinclar and Axwell’s cheese-smelling material also reappeared. The episode felt like a pre-Christmas collection of the year’s favourite formats, with Dear Scott, pop quizzes and one of the show’s most shamelessly named games all receiving another outing before the break.
