Friday Extra Show: the proposal was the obvious place to start
Extra podcast edition
Chris returned after missing the previous Friday edition and immediately chose the most emotional moment of Valentine’s week.
Jamie’s proposal to Lauren had been set up as an ordinary Bangers call.
Lauren thought she was choosing between Scott and Chris’s tracks.
Instead, Radio 1 introduced a third option.
Jamie.
He thanked Lauren for surprising him with a new car and said that after years together it was his turn to give her a surprise.
Then he asked her to marry him.
Lauren’s shocked reaction had made the studio unusually quiet.
She said yes.
Chris admitted that Scott and he were far more comfortable making stupid jokes than trying to handle genuinely emotional live radio.
Jamie had to be hidden from Lauren
The Friday podcast explained more of the setup.
The team had needed to speak to Jamie privately, keep Lauren unaware and make the Bangers invitation sound completely ordinary.
Jamie was nervous.
The producers were nervous too because any technical mistake or suspicious wording could have exposed the plan before he reached the question.
Once Lauren accepted, Jamie immediately headed towards her workplace with the ring.
Chris considered it one of the loveliest surprises the show had staged for a listener.
The ultimate snake saga reached its endpoint
The Extra Show also looked back over the Charlotte and Maria story.
A listener nomination for an unnamed python had somehow evolved into two women discovering they were being dated by the same man, arranging a coordinated meeting and confronting him in a bar.
By Valentine’s Day, the real Essex snake had officially been named Will.
Chris appreciated how completely the story had developed by accident.
The programme started by asking for funny ex stories.
It ended with an actual animal receiving one man’s name.
Friday again became the aftermath programme
The episode returned to clips and details which had been shortened for daytime transmission.
As with Billy’s conception story two weeks earlier, the Extra Show allowed Chris to explain the practical side of a feature after the emotion or chaos had already happened.
For a week built around Valentine’s Day, the programme had produced almost every possible kind of relationship story.
A proposal.
A double-dating confrontation.
A snake.
And a father gleefully describing a Morris Marina.
