Greg James had disappeared into an escape room
Radio 1 Breakfast had begun an enormous station-wide game.
At around 7.40am, Greg James was led away blindfolded and taken into a specially built escape room.
The rest of Radio 1 had to solve clues and help him get out.
Scott had been on Breakfast that morning and stayed fully invested throughout the afternoon.
The show effectively abandoned ordinary plans in favour of one mission.
Free Greg.
Nobody had told Scott anything in advance
Scott explained that the usual Breakfast Show meeting had been almost pointless.
Greg’s team could not reveal the puzzle.
The station wanted genuine reactions.
By the time Scott and Chris came on air, listeners had already produced hundreds of theories.
Some were sensible.
Some involved pets, cryptic numbers and completely unrelated pieces of Greg’s life.
The amount of information became part of the problem.
Scott could not tell which clues mattered.
Marcus Mumford suggested Greg’s house
One theory involved searching Greg’s home.
Marcus Mumford had floated the possibility on Breakfast.
That was enough for Scott.
The programme gained access to Greg’s house and treated it like a crime scene.
Scott looked through rooms for anything which might connect with the puzzles.
Then he used the opportunity to do something which had absolutely nothing to do with solving the escape room.
Scott got into Greg’s bed
Scott removed his clothes and climbed into Greg and Bella’s bed.
He later defended the decision as taking an opportunity which might never happen again.
Chris could not understand why finding himself in somebody else’s house automatically required nakedness.
Scott also explored the bathroom and took photographs around the house, behaving more like an overexcited visitor than a puzzle solver.
The image of Scott lying in Greg James’s bed quickly became one of the escape-room event’s most replayed moments.
Greg remained trapped.
Scott appeared to be enjoying himself.
The whole station became one programme
The escape room was unusual because no single Radio 1 show owned it.
Breakfast began it.
Other presenters carried it through the day.
Listeners contributed clues continuously.
Scott and Chris’s afternoon show became another stage of the same live story.
Greg would still be inside when they finished.
The following day, the clues would finally come together.
