19 February 2019: Radio 1 finally got Greg James out of the Escape Room

Greg had been trapped for almost 30 hours

By Tuesday afternoon, the Radio 1 Escape Room had consumed the station.

Greg James had spent the night inside.

Listeners had continued analysing clues.

Scott and Chris returned with the pressure of knowing the game needed to end eventually.

One major lead involved listener Claudia.

Greg had previously sent her an Ainsley Harriott cookbook as a Star Listener prize.

The book suddenly appeared to matter.

Page 104 became the obsession

A clock or mirrored clue in the escape room pointed towards 104.

The team tried several interpretations.

Would something be delivered to Claudia at 1.04pm?

Was page 104 of the cookbook important?

Radio 1 called Claudia and asked her to watch the front door.

At 1.04, nothing happened.

That theory failed.

The book itself remained suspicious.

Eventually the markings and numbers connected with the cookbook helped move the final solution forward.

Scott loved the scale of planning required.

Greg had given the book to Claudia before she had any idea she was going to become part of a national escape-room game.

The ending became theatrical

Eventually the sequence of clues was solved.

Greg escaped after nearly 30 hours.

The door collapsed as he came out.

Pyrotechnics fired.

Scott immediately complained that his own show had never been given an exit with a collapsing wall and fireworks.

Greg sounded exhausted and relieved.

Listeners said they had been secretly following the game at work and checking updates through the night.

For two days, Radio 1 had effectively turned into one long programme.

Scott’s naked visit was not forgotten

The escape ending also revived the argument about Scott visiting Greg’s house the previous day.

Greg learned more about what Scott had done in the bedroom.

Scott still saw nothing particularly wrong with trying the bed while he had access.

Chris reminded Greg to consider washing or burning the bedding.

Scott insisted he had simply rested.

Nobody believed the word “rested” made the situation normal.

Then Chris introduced the beard question

Once the escape room ended, the show finally returned to ordinary subjects.

Chris wondered whether removing a beard during a relationship could make somebody look so different that their partner felt as though they were with another person.

Listeners described men they had initially fancied with facial hair and then struggled to recognise once it disappeared.

Chris jokingly pushed the idea further.

If somebody completely changed their appearance after a relationship began, was that almost cheating?

Scott thought this was ridiculous.

The topic survived into Wednesday anyway.
