18 January 2019: The Friday Extra Show gave Benidorm beach baby Olivia the full story

Friday Extra Show: the podcast was made in a hurry

Extra podcast edition

Chris and producer Will had only managed to secure a studio for a few minutes.

They still wanted a Friday Extra Show.

The rushed setup suited a podcast whose main purpose was playing the things there had not been enough time for during the week.

Chris described the previous few days as some of the strongest since returning for 2019.

Lewis Capaldi had become a major part of the programme.

Where Do You Think They Were? had produced another family sequel.

The Extra Show began there.

Olivia’s Benidorm story became even more detailed

The longer edit returned to Olivia and her dad Julian.

Olivia had heard her brother Tom discover his Travelodge origin and decided she wanted the same information.

Julian reconstructed the Spanish holiday in full.

There was the hotel later associated with *Benidorm*.

There were bars.

There was dancing.

There was Enrique Iglesias.

There was repeated use of the word “horny.”

Then came the late-night walk along the seafront and the fateful decision to head towards the beach rather than the hotel.

Chris thought this was the moment Where Do You Think They Were? stopped being merely a birthday feature and became a genuine family-history service nobody had asked the BBC to provide.

Jack’s date review ran unedited

The Friday show also released more of Jack’s conversation about the TripAdvisor-style review sent by a former date.

Jack admitted his archive contained around 25 old chats.

They were not all ex-partners.

Some were simply dates or people things had not worked out with.

His approach was to archive, unfollow and move on so the conversations were out of sight.

Scott found this psychologically dangerous because the people did not disappear simply because WhatsApp moved them to another folder.

Jack also explained the testimonial line he had placed on his dating profile from somebody who had rejected him.

The quote was genuinely real.

He had kept the screenshot as proof.

The Extra Show kept becoming an archive programme

Chris also used Friday to bring back material from older years of the programme.

That had become one of the format’s most useful roles.

A normal weekday show moved too quickly to revisit everything.

The extra podcast could play unedited calls, forgotten interviews and clips which had become funnier with age.

January 2019 was therefore beginning to develop two parallel archives at once.

Where Do You Think They Were? was documenting listeners’ family history.

Friday Extra was documenting Scott and Chris’s own.
