21 January 2019: Alan licked planes for good luck

Scott had Kondoed his house

Scott had become obsessed with *Tidying Up with Marie Kondo*.

The effect was immediate.

He had cleared cupboards, reorganised drawers and reached the point where the house almost felt too empty.

The show joked that Sigrid’s famously simple wardrobe of white T-shirts and jeans might represent the ultimate Kondo lifestyle.

Listeners admitted they had spent the weekend reorganising bedrooms after hearing Scott discuss the programme.

Working from home became a club

The programme also spoke to the people listening while working from home.

Scott and Chris imagined the unofficial WFH Club as people in dressing gowns taking calls, answering emails and pretending the lack of a commute made them more productive.

Listeners described the freedom of working from the kitchen, sofa or bed.

The presenters immediately wanted to know how much actual work happened.

The replies suggested the answer varied.

A toilet hack promised to change lives

A listener also supplied a toilet technique which Chris described as potentially a game changer.

The precise mechanics were discussed at a level which made Scott unsure whether he actually wanted to try it.

The programme had a long history of investigating how people sat, wiped and generally behaved in bathrooms.

2019 showed no sign of becoming more dignified.

Alan licked planes

Ask Me Anything then found exactly the kind of person the feature had been designed for.

Alan told Radio 1:

“I lick planes.”

Before boarding, Alan deliberately touched his tongue to the outside of the aircraft beside the door.

He had done it for years and considered it a good-luck ritual.

His earliest clear memory involved an old Airtours flight.

Alan admitted he could not properly explain why the habit had started.

It simply became something he felt uncomfortable not doing.

Everybody could see him

The video made the behaviour even more remarkable.

Alan queued normally, walked up the aircraft steps and then visibly licked the fuselage while other passengers waited behind him.

His girlfriend had filmed it and appeared familiar with the ritual.

Scott and Chris asked the obvious questions about dirt, germs, paint and whether airline staff had ever stopped him.

Alan accepted that the whole thing sounded odd.

He still could not imagine boarding a plane without doing it.

Ask Me Anything had begun with unusual people.

A man voluntarily licking commercial aircraft proved the feature’s definition of unusual was already very broad.
