11 January 2019: The Friday Extra Show gave Lewis Capaldi more karaoke and replayed Chris meeting Jennifer Aniston

Friday Extra Show: 2019 began with leftovers

Extra podcast edition

Chris returned with the first Friday Extra Show of 2019.

The purpose was the same as the previous year: give listeners more from the week, including longer edits which could not fit into the normal daily programme.

The first week had supplied plenty.

Tinder had gone down.

A caller had been exposed as a liar.

Where Do You Think They Were? had involved Toy Story and a Travelodge.

Lewis Capaldi had become an instant show favourite.

Lewis spent longer with listeners

The extra edit from Lewis Capaldi’s interview allowed more time for his conversations with listeners.

People invited him for karaoke, nights out and even food.

Lewis spoke about previously going out after gigs and choosing socialising over planned activities.

He continued treating every invitation as though it might actually happen.

The studio also returned to karaoke.

Lewis demonstrated how easily he could move from comedy conversation into singing.

The Miley Cyrus thread from Thursday therefore became even more central to the week.

Tom’s dad supplied the full Travelodge story

The Friday edition also carried a longer version of Tom’s Where Do You Think They Were?

Julian again reconstructed the night around Toy Story, the Ford Escort estate, Marvin Gaye and the cinema car park.

When the car proved unsuitable, the couple moved to the nearby Travelodge.

Julian’s memory of room 24 became the detail nobody was going to let Tom forget.

The Extra Show allowed the whole story to breathe without the time pressure of the weekday programme.

Chris reopened the archive for Jennifer Aniston

The final section came from the show’s fictional archive basement at Scott’s house.

Chris replayed his old interview with Jennifer Aniston while she was promoting *We’re the Millers*.

Chris opened by admitting he did not interview major Hollywood stars very often and felt overly made-up for the occasion.

He described himself as looking like “a pig in a wig.”

Jennifer immediately reassured him that he did not.

The interview then drifted through stripper research, a Prague club which served steak during performances and a terrible anagram Chris had found for Jennifer Aniston’s name.

Watford entered the Hollywood press junket

Chris also asked Jennifer about celebrity “lists”, tried to obtain an extremely mundane fact which could become a news story and eventually gave her a personalised Watford shirt.

He had the name printed on the back and asked whether she might wear it while being photographed walking across airport tarmac.

Jennifer seemed genuinely delighted by the gift.

Chris ended the interview relieved that he had survived.

Years later, the awkwardness was precisely why he wanted to play it again.
