Lewis Capaldi immediately became a favourite guest
Lewis Capaldi came into Radio 1 with “Someone You Loved” as Tune of the Week.
Scott and Chris had already enjoyed his deliberately unserious social-media personality.
In person, Lewis was even better for the show.
Listeners called to invite him on nights out, offer karaoke and tell stories about having encountered him around Scotland.
Lewis treated almost every caller like somebody he might genuinely go out with.
A Miley Cyrus song appeared from nowhere
The conversation reached karaoke.
Lewis said one of his songs was Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart”.
Then the studio moved towards Miley Cyrus’s “The Climb.”
What began as messing around became a proper performance.
Lewis started singing over a backing track and, after some uncertainty over the words, suddenly sounded exactly like the serious singer responsible for one of Radio 1’s biggest new records.
Scott and Chris loved the contrast.
The guest who had spent most of the interview joking could switch instantly into a huge vocal.
They persuaded him to promise a better recorded version.
That promise would continue through the following week.
Tom agreed to hear the truth
Where Do You Think They Were? returned with 23-year-old Tom.
His dad Julian agreed to explain exactly where he had been conceived.
The story began in 1995 with Tom’s parents going to the cinema.
The film was Toy Story.
Julian drove a company Ford Escort estate and parked towards the back of the cinema car park.
After the film, he put Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing” on the cassette player.
Scott immediately realised the car was going to become important.
The Ford Escort was not enough
Tom’s parents started canoodling in the car.
After around 20 minutes, Julian decided the situation was not working.
They could not go back to the family home.
So they went to a nearby Travelodge.
Julian had remembered the detail Scott and Chris always hoped for.
The room number was 24.
Tom discovered that the story of his life now involved Toy Story, a Ford Escort estate, Marvin Gaye and Travelodge room 24.
Scott thought the narrative had everything.
Tom mainly wondered whether he could ever watch Toy Story normally again.
Honesty returned after Wednesday’s liars
The timing was perfect.
Only a day earlier, Radio 1 had exposed Cody’s entirely fake Tinder story and Charlie’s fake apartment.
Where Do You Think They Were? was now providing the opposite.
Parents were giving listeners information they could probably have lived very happily without knowing.
