10 July 2018: Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin inspired the oversharing relationship test

Chris finally went back to the dentist

Chris had been avoiding the dentist for a long time.

When he eventually returned, the appointment began like a confession.

He was asked whether he was there for a routine check or whether there was something he needed to declare.

Scott understood the fear.

People who stayed away for years often felt they were about to be personally judged rather than simply have their teeth examined.

Listeners shared similar experiences, including one woman whose dentist loudly told her she was a young woman who should be taking better care of her smile.

Another listener had encountered a particularly awkward modern problem.

She joined a dating app, found her dentist and discovered that he had swiped for her.

She messaged him.

He replied that he could not date patients.

That meant she now needed either a different dentist or several extremely uncomfortable future appointments.

Bieber and Baldwin were extremely online

Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin had become engaged and were posting intensely emotional messages about each other.

Scott read the kind of declarations which thanked God, described overwhelming happiness and presented the relationship as something destined to happen.

What surprised him was how quickly the public version had developed.

Only recently, the celebrity relationship picture had looked completely different.

Hailey also had old tweets from years earlier which showed her as a genuine Bieber fan.

Scott liked the idea that a former fan had effectively completed the ultimate celebrity relationship journey.

The feature then widened to ordinary people whose relationship posts were similarly relentless.

Listeners nominated friends and colleagues who used social media for long declarations of love, even when they saw the same partner every day.

Scott was less interested in whether the couples were genuinely happy than why every follower needed a detailed update.

Justin Timberlake rearranged his show around England

Justin Timberlake was due to play the O2 on the same evening as England’s World Cup semi-final against Croatia.

Rather than force ticket-holders to choose, he announced that doors would open early and the match would be shown on the venue’s screens.

Scott and Chris agreed it was a sensible solution.

What they could not get past was the unusual voice Timberlake used in the announcement, which became almost as interesting as the plan itself.

The entire country appeared to be reorganising itself around England.

Now even an international pop star’s arena show had joined in.
