11 July 2018: Clive Tyldesley chose Bangers hours before England’s World Cup semi-final

The student-deposit campaign reached the landlord

The previous day, Scott and Chris had promised to help students get their deposits back.

Cody’s landlord did not want to come on air, but she did respond privately.

Scott relayed the verdict.

She knew about a hole in the wall.

She had been told there were no rats or pigeons.

She knew there were stains.

Of three bathrooms, one was apparently pretty clean and two were more average.

The important thing was that the students had not hidden the problems.

Scott believed honesty, plus the emotional force of a national-radio plea, gave them the best possible chance.

“Did you do bits last night?” became a street question

The show also launched a simple new game.

Members of the public were asked several ordinary getting-to-know-you questions.

Then, without warning, came the real one:

“Did you do bits last night?”

The humour came from how abruptly it changed the tone.

One of the standout callers was 73-year-old Keith.

After polite questions about his life and interests, he was asked whether he had “done bits”.

His answer was no.

The phrase and the delivery became instantly repeatable around the office.

Clive Tyldesley came on Bangers from Moscow

England were playing Croatia in the World Cup semi-final that evening.

Chris happened to know the man who would be commentating on the match for millions of viewers.

Clive Tyldesley joined live from Moscow.

Rather than ask for a serious tactical preview, Scott and Chris put him on Bangers.

The absurdity of using one of the biggest voices in British football broadcasting to choose between Radio 1 songs only made the feature better.

Clive had an enormous professional job waiting for him that evening.

First, he had to settle Scott and Chris’s much smaller musical argument.

Bamboleo became football-related

The show nearly forgot Bamboleo Wednesday because the World Cup had taken over everything.

When they remembered, it became a football-themed version.

Listeners joined in from offices, cars and workplaces around the country.

For England fans, the afternoon was essentially a long wait for the semi-final.

Scott and Chris were just finding increasingly elaborate ways of filling it.
