Paul O’Grady helps Scott deal with the red-wine-stained dog
Transfer Deadline Day had swept through Radio 1, although Scott and Beccy freely admitted they had only recently worked out why everyone was so invested in it. They tried to pick up enough football vocabulary to join in, while Scott marvelled at colleagues planning their whole evening around Sky Sports News and the final rush before the deadline.
Scott also confessed to a very modern form of neediness: leaving his phone alone for a few hours, returning to find no texts or voicemails, and immediately wondering why nobody wanted to speak to him. That led into the show’s collection of habits people hate but cannot stop, from obsessively reading irritating blogs to checking lottery numbers despite never buying a ticket.
The red-wine-stained white dog was still causing trouble at Scott’s flat. The stain had faded but had apparently turned bluish after his earlier attempts to fix it, leaving Scott with dog shampoo, no real plan and an owner due back from holiday. The tale had become such a fixture that it was inevitable the day’s guest would be asked for help.
Paul O’Grady was the ideal person to consult. With his own large collection of animals, he told Scott to stop experimenting and take the dog to a groomer, where the mark could be dealt with properly. Their conversation widened into Paul’s farm, his dogs, sheep, goats and notoriously aggressive geese, as well as the rescued lamb he had taken in after it was found abandoned in a wheelie bin.
Paul also spoke warmly about Lady Gaga, remembering her from before she became a global star and describing the early piano rehearsals that had shown just how talented she was. It was a generous, funny interview, and Scott ended the show with both a practical answer to the dog problem and another reminder of why Paul was such an easy guest to have in the studio.
