24 January 2018: Tanya dumped her boyfriend using Usher’s “Burn”

Scott returned from New Zealand

Scott came back after visiting relatives in New Zealand, a journey complicated by the 13-hour time difference and the sheer amount of time required to travel each way.

He returned with a local internet phrase that had become impossible to avoid.

A viral clip featured a man explaining that he had left his scooter outside a dairy before discovering, “nek minnit”, that something had gone wrong.

The deliberately compressed “next minute” spread into advertising, television and everyday speech.

Scott had heard it so often in New Zealand that he brought it straight back to Radio 1.

Tanya used Usher for her first break-up

A discussion about people borrowing song lyrics for difficult conversations produced listener Tanya.

As a teenager, she wanted to break up with her first boyfriend but had no idea what people were supposed to say.

So she learned sections of Usher’s “Burn”.

Her boyfriend preferred rock music and did not recognise the lyrics.

He only noticed that some of Tanya’s carefully prepared sentences rhymed and asked what she meant by “burn”.

Years later, Tanya recreated the conversation with Chris playing the confused boyfriend.

Other relationships had musical scripts too

Another listener admitted using a line from Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself”, specifically the section about a mother not liking somebody despite liking everyone.

Scott and Chris concluded that pop music had been quietly supplying cowardly break-up speeches for years.

Amy chose medium chicken and Chris’s Banger

Bangers became an attempt to judge somebody’s preferred chicken heat simply from their voice.

Caller Amy was a medium.

Her boyfriend was also a medium.

Scott proudly declared himself lemon and herb.

Chris chose Sean Kingston’s “Fire Burning” while Scott offered Eminem’s “Stan”.

Amy sided with Chris.
