Friday Extra Show: listeners had saved the podcast
Extra podcast edition
Chris recorded the Friday podcast after DJing with Scott in Glasgow and getting only a couple of hours’ sleep.
His voice was suffering.
He still insisted on making the episode.
Listeners had written directly to Radio 1 management asking for the Friday Extra Show to continue.
Chris read out some of the messages, including emails which sounded amusingly formal as they addressed the station controller about the importance of one extra podcast.
The response had worked.
Management had agreed the show could continue as long as Chris wanted to make it and listeners kept supporting it.
The Ostrich Pillow caused an actual telling-off
Chris rang Scott to discuss their previous night of travel.
The flight to Glasgow had been heavily delayed.
Chris had tried sleeping while wearing the huge Ostrich Pillow over his head.
Scott already complained that Chris moved around a lot when sleeping on planes.
The passenger in front found out why.
Once Chris removed the pillow, the man turned around and gave him a very direct telling-off.
He said he did not know whether Chris was a nervous passenger but the constant twitching and pushing against the seat needed to stop immediately.
Chris admitted it was intimidating.
The funniest part for Scott was that the man had apparently waited until Chris’s face became visible before confronting him.
Nobody wanted to argue with the strange headless-looking object behind them.
Ella checked in after becoming famous
Chris called Ella from the week’s Where Do You Think They Were?
She had already noticed the consequences of being on Radio 1.
Friends and family had heard the feature and people were talking about the story.
Ella said it was probably the weirdest game she had ever played.
The show had made her parents explain the circumstances of her conception in front of a national audience.
Now the Friday podcast was asking how everybody felt about it afterwards.
The parents had apparently enjoyed their own moment of attention too.
Chris liked using the extra edition for this exact purpose.
The weekday show created the chaos.
Friday could find out what happened next.
Good News Jamie brought the giraffe
Then came Good News Jamie.
Listeners had specifically asked for more of him after his previous Friday appearance.
Jamie announced that he had a really good joke.
It involved Tinder, a giraffe entering a bar, drinking too much and an increasingly long sequence of details before eventually reaching the punchline.
Chris realised almost immediately that the joke was going to take far longer than expected.
Jamie did not rush.
Every unnecessary detail survived.
The giraffe drank.
The barman warned Jamie not to leave it behind.
The story kept expanding.
The length became funnier than the actual ending.
For a podcast already being made by a presenter with almost no sleep, allowing Good News Jamie to tell an enormous giraffe joke was exactly the sort of editorial decision the Friday Extra Show existed to make.
