How did it even go out on the radio?

I don't know from memory. But if the date can be tracked down I'm sure we would have clipped it out or I may have the show itself recorded.

EDIT: I've found it! 1st May 2007, the story was Laura went commando at the Sony Radio Awards the night before. Couple of mentions I've found are at the 2hr 10min mark (after Mylo/Miami Sound Machine), and at 2hr 15mins as well. There could be more about but I spotted those, he just puts us down as "the unofficial website". Backstory on it starts around 25 mins in.

Couple of website screenshots from the day itself as well. I've used my amazing mspaint editing skills to clean it up, as apparently we are more tasteful in 2023 than 2007. And are a Radio 2 family site now.

  2. Radio 1 played Tina Turner the other day when I tuned in, it's a one of spot play on the chart show it's not gonna piss off all the grime and rap fans with one play really.. And even if you are young, you'd of have to have lived under a rock to not even of heard of her. Strange choice.

Probably our last major mention on Radio 1 ?

Do you remember the one where Scott said we had the exclusives on Laura's clacker (or words like that) on here? I think it crashed the website, probably 2006. I have screengrabs.

It's also a sad reality that given the volume of output - what do you keep?

Even on our favourite shows, how much of the output is real gold.  There's the odd very funny moment on Vick and Jordan or Greg's show but on the average Radio 1 day how much of most of the output ever needs heard again?  (Ditto for all other stations)

Probably a question of producers making an effort to snip the stand out moments as they go along.

Since around June 2007, every Radio 1/2/3/4/5 etc show has been kept. A project called Redux started that year and it basically captured the free view output of TV and radio from the BBC. Before that it's probably scattered here and there. Shows from big news events, big guests, live shows etc were kept from what I can gather.

I mean the final Mills days at Radio 1 was very reliant on our content up until the more recent years. So I'm not sure they're any further forward with really old content. There's still the odd show kicking about from Mark and Lard, Mark Goodier, Backstage, and Sunday Surgery (whooooo?!)

Yeah I can't imagine they kept every single show. When Radio 1 reached 50 a few years ago I know from a few people, that old producers were contacted to see what material they had. If any. I think live shows, special guests etc were probably kept.

I remember something in 2006 called 'BBC Infax', which was public. You couldn't download anything, but it was a small window into what they had sitting about. It was only around for 12 months or so and nothing has really replaced it as such.

  6. Has anyone got any modern insight on how the BBC archive is looking right now? Especially when it comes to Radio, mainly Radio 1?

Around 5 or so years ago I did some short term work for the BBC. And had access to BBC Redux, which at the time was the BBC's internal archive go-to. I searched for Radio 1 stuff but could only get anything from July 2007 to the current day.

Redux mainly automatically captured and uploaded the freeview output from July 07 onwards. There was archive content in there, but mainly TV stuff. Which bizarrely included lots of circa 2000 VHS rips of BBC breakfast with Jeremy Bowen with his epic mustache of the time.

Redux has now since been integrated with other elements of BBC archive. I no longer have access to any of it at all. So if anyone knows, what's in there these days? Is there any classic Scott Mills early breakfast gold locked away, Chris Moyles, Mark and Lard... Chappers and Dave? Would be interesting to know.

There's a few unavailable final shows as well, that may well be floating out there in the ether on tape or disc, people like Kevin Greening, Steve Lamacq, Colin & Edith, Judge Jules etc, which I'd love to hear again one day as well.

A bit late to respond to this but I actually have Judge Jules' final Radio 1 show around somewhere. It was nothing too special tbh, a studio show where he played a tune from each year from the start of his time on Radio 1 till the end. It was 11pm till 1am on a Friday Night, a low key end to one of the biggest dance DJ's on the planet around 2000. I get the feeling Jules just didn't want the fuss though. I'll have to seek it out, but otherwise I'm sure it's on the Judge Jules archive website anyway.

  8. I don't think Radio 1 as far as dance shows will reach the levels of Pete Tong, Danny Rampling, Judge Jules, Dave Pearce, Seb Fontaine for me. They had the luxury of live shows back 20 odd years ago though, which made them what they were along with the quality of music that was around. BBC don't seem to have the budget nowdays, to do the live from Creamfields sort of thing they did then.

Saying that, I think dance music in general is in a far better place that it was around 2013 way. Sarah Story has taken to it like a duck to water, really enjoy her show. Pete Tong is always worth a listen too if your into the deeper side of dance music.

its probably only stuff like Boom and maybe Jazz FM that would play music from those ages. Its something to think that the people who grew up and had the music of the 50s as the soundtrack of their teenage and childhood years are at the generation at the end of their lives of their 80s and 90s. My grandparents now at 70 and 69 both born early 50s and 60s. Considering the legacy of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones some artists from the ages wonder how long radio stations that play all the ages will feature songs go back those years. I wonder how it would be for DJs at parties and radio stations to be playing ABBA’s Dancing Queen in 2040 or 2050. When popular culture becomes embedded in history it will be interesting

A good way to scale it is look at what gets played at something like a wedding disco, or party. Where family members there and friends range from the very young to the very old. 20 years ago it wasn't uncommon to hear something like "Rock Around The Clock" and a couple of likewise for the older crew. Nowdays, that's very rare. The oldest you get is Candi Station Young Heart Run Free, maybe if its called for a few motown tracks like the Four Tops. But even that is pushing it nowdays.

Its kind of like the angle Radio 2 are at right now, the same as that DJ at that party. Can you carry on playing music to a generation that isn't around to hear it anymore?

For me I find that Dance Anthems has the lack of importance to tune into these days miss having features and different things to connect the songs to show its a thought out curation. Seems too much of just playing tracks that listed up on the computer with nothing more to it.

I'm not sure if Radio 1 ever aimed for the "new" dance anthems to be the same as its original format with Dave Pearce. Or meant for it to try and offer a modern version of what Judge Jules' 5pm Saturday show used to.

Back around the mid 90s to the mid 00s it felt like young people used to go to bigger scale events and more often. They used to travel the country on weekends going to superclubs like Cream, Gatecrasher in Sheffield etc. So the original dance anthems was on at the right time on a Sunday night, everyone interacting with the show saying where they had been over the weekend and with who. What DJ they had seen and what was the big tune of the weekend etc. House and Garage music were big around this point, but my a country mile it was the boom of Trance around the millenium that stood out. It was the fuel for the show really.

Todays version I do see has a bit of an identity crisis. That said Charlie has history with Kiss who have always been heavily involved with dance culture. So playing commercial dance tracks, she's good enough to do that really. Interacting with the listeners will be different though, there's that many sub genres of dance (especially house) now it's hard to keep up. Not as many people are into one strain and the same thing now, pulling the same way. Also at that time of day it's usually the dancing in the kitchen and cooking the dinner type who will text in etc.

  11. Also listened to bits of Rickie, Charlie and Melvin whilst at work earlier for the first time. Wasn't too taken up on them tbh. Lots of laughing at not much, pushing the mic limiter into the red and talking over one another. Charlie does OK on her own with dance anthems. I get the zoo format as Moyles used to have it especially on drive time, but it has to be pulled off correctly.

Jordan North as per has been great when I've heard him. Used to listen to his old weekend show in my old job and he's just as good if not better, he's tailor made for the big shows. If anyone can step into the main role, it's him.

Its hard for me to think of Greg James coming to the end of his time at Radio 1 though. He's still young to me, and it feels like he only started there a moment ago from student radio. Although he's 37, he's feels more like an older brother to the whippersnappers. Different to when Moyles left, and to younger listeners at that time who saw him as that "millenium shock jock from 10 years ago when I was in primary school".

Saying that Mark and Lard were doing a daytime radio 1 show until their mid 40s, winning sony golds. And then there's what Scott did, which is another level altogether. Like I said, Greg has a good few years there yet imo.

Take a look at a 2011 R2 Schedule, to see what a thing of wonder it was ...

    BBC Radio 2 - Schedules, Tuesday 1 February 2011

Radcliffe and Maconie, like them as a duo. But never quite reached the levels of Mark and Lard. Totally different thing obviously. Also nice to see Alex Lester on there too, met him once or twice working in Birmingham. Really nice chap.

Also a show playing 1950s music is unheared of nowdays. Can't be many who listened to that back in 2011 still about...

Marc Riley, Edith Bowman, Steve Lamarq would be good names even Radcliffe and Maconie. But if this was several years later Clara Amfo would be a clever fit but seems not the time.

May be a risk but Mark Radcliffe and Marc Riley on the old 2!? I can dream... Both are too into their own thing now.

I think Greg has a good few years left at Radio 1. I recall him when he first joined and not to say he was bad around 07/08 way but he's come such a long way. He was brilliant the day after the Queen died. The way he connected with listeners and reflected himself on air. Haven't heard anything on that level since Mark Radcliffe & Chris Moyles on the day and days after of 9/11.

I simply think it's more of a Radio 1 thing than 2 with him. They can't afford to lose him at the moment. Scott going was always going to happen, but Greg can't leave until the next generation is properly ready.

I have listened to Jo Whiley every evening this week. Firstly it has been lovely to reconnect with an old fave from R1 days. Secondly i throw her name in the hat as my fave/ideal replacement for Ken and would be great to have her back on mid  mornings. I think they will change show time to 10-12 or 10-1 though.

Think I said this in the chat box thingy contraption. But I doubt Jo will move now. She's back in the time slot she started out in the 90s on Radio 1, only this time without Steve Lemaq. The abuse she had when she was paired up with Simon Mayo on drive was disgusting. Even he had to step up and state that it wasn't her fault and she shouldn't of had that thrown at her. Plus she can get away with more post 7pm. Ive heard her play the likes of Wu Tang Clan Gravel Pit not too long ago, can Radio 2 play that before 7? Not sure. I think she likes her musical freedom there as a, specialist show, so why sacrifice that?
