Clara Amfo leaves Radio 1

Clara Amfo has left Radio 1 almost a decade after joining the station.

Amfo, who joined the station in 2015 after a stint at 1Xtra, took over The Official Chart Show before becoming the weekday mid-morning presenter.

In July 2021, she became the presenter of Radio 1’s Future Sounds Show after Annie Mac announced her departure. It was revealed she was stepping down from the programme – and leaving the station – in December 2023.

The BBC says she is not leaving the corporation and will continue to be involved with BBC Music ‘specials’, and will present a new BBC Sounds show. She has been presenting special Top of the Pops shows since 2017.

Jack Saunders will take over the new music slot on 15 April, leading to a reshuffle of the specialist line-up.

A number of past and present presenters turned out to bid Amfo goodbye on her final programme including Trevor Nelson, Rickie and Melvin, Annie Mac, Nick Grimshaw and Greg James.

Speaking at the time of the announcement, Clara said: “I’m so proud of the work I’ve been able to do on every show, whether it’s been from the 8th floor, a city in the UK or a pop star’s house across the pond!

“I’m grateful to have had the ears of the listeners who have consistently shown up for me. I’m enamoured by everyone I’ve had the privilege of working alongside for each and every broadcast. I’m energised and excited for my next chapter as part of the network and beyond!”
