18 April 2023: Ellie Goulding on guilty pleasures, old emails and Victorian toilets

The Birthday Game: Vicky

Vicky lived in Martham in Norfolk and planned to celebrate with a local birthday meal.

She wanted something disco or from the 1980s.

Her first spin was the Detroit Spinners’ Working My Way Back to You, number one in 1980.

Vicky immediately decided that it was exactly the kind of record she had requested and accepted it without risking another spin.

Choosing a first-dance song

Scott discussed trying to find a first-dance song for his wedding to Sam.

Sam had suggested one record before Scott pointed out that the lyrics were actually about somebody leaving their partner.

Scott said the choice needed more attention than simply liking the melody.

Ellie Goulding

Ellie Goulding joined Scott following the release of her album Higher Than Heaven.

She also discussed Eurovision after Scott played her several of the year’s entries.

Ellie liked Iceland’s live vocal and Norway’s song, while Scott encouraged her to look at Finland’s unusual entry and reminded her that Loreen was returning for Sweden.

The Same Interview

Scott found questions Ellie had answered more than a decade earlier and asked them again.

Guilty pleasure

Ellie’s modern answer included reality television such as Geordie Shore, Ex on the Beach and Below Deck.

Her earlier answer had also included trashy television, alongside chocolates with strawberry cream.

Ellie remembered watching Geordie Shore because touring and performing meant she had missed much of the ordinary clubbing experience in her twenties.

What are your songs about?

Ellie’s current answer included love, escape, joy, infatuation, sensuality and “love in outer space”.

Her younger answer had focused on love and heartbreak, including other people’s stories, darker subjects and the way technology could damage relationships.

Ellie said she sometimes looked through old emails to former partners while writing, particularly on flights after a few drinks, although she often found the messages embarrassing.

Fancy dress

Ellie’s most recent costume had been Barbie, although she had not enjoyed it as much as dressing as Mr Blobby.

Her original answer chose the 1920s or 1930s because of the elegance and elaborate clothing.

That prompted Ellie to wonder how Victorian women managed to use the toilet while wearing several layers and large dresses.

The Radio 2 QI elves later explained that women could lift the front of the dress and straddle the toilet facing what modern users would consider backwards.

Handover

Scott handed over to Sara Cox after Ellie completed the Same Interview and raised an unexpected question about Victorian toilets.
