Scott’s itinerary lasted one day
By Tuesday, Scott had already accepted that nobody had followed the social plan he carefully prepared.
Instead of moving through several bars and activities, the team had stayed at Fistral Beach watching the sunset and drinking there.
He threatened to stop organising everybody.
Nobody believed him.
The team still could not agree about swimming
The plan to go into the sea remained a running argument.
Some of the younger team members were keen.
Scott remained deeply uncomfortable with the idea of colleagues suddenly appearing in trunks or swimwear.
He remembered abandoning the BBC gym years earlier partly because seeing people from work exercising made them feel too real.
The Newquay setting kept turning completely ordinary activities into material for the show.
Brother or Lover found the perfect Cornish contestants
The local edition of Brother or Lover featured Carrie and Craig.
Carrie owned a surf shop.
Craig ran a kite-surfing business and had become a British champion.
They were exactly the kind of pair the programme hoped to find in Newquay.
The team asked whether Carrie felt butterflies when Craig emerged from the sea, whether they went to Boardmasters together and how supportive Craig was with compliments.
Their answers were remarkably flat.
Carrie said she was used to seeing him come out of the sea.
Craig did not sound like a man who spent much time delivering romantic speeches.
Most of the team got it wrong
Scott concluded there was almost no romance between them and guessed they were siblings.
Others thought their shared interests and relaxed manner suggested a couple.
When the answer finally came, Carrie confirmed Craig was her lover.
They had been married only a couple of weeks and had two children.
The almost complete absence of obvious romance had been the trick.
They were simply an extremely relaxed married couple.
Vicky Hawkesworth was given the golden USB
The show also looked ahead to Dean McCullough and Vicky Hawkesworth, who were due to take over the afternoon slot.
Newquay was used to give Vicky her first Radio 1 DJ set and to pass on one of Scott’s symbolic pieces of radio history, the golden USB.
With Newquay providing the backdrop, Tuesday mixed nostalgia for the old show with increasingly obvious signs that the next one was almost ready to arrive.
