8 August 2022: Stupid Street became Stupid Strip as Scott imposed a Newquay holiday itinerary

Newquay brought the friendship back to where it began

Scott and Chris opened the week overlooking Fistral Beach in Newquay.

The weather was bright, the beach was busy and both immediately became nostalgic about how often they had visited the town when they first became friends.

It felt like the right place to spend one of their final weeks together on Radio 1.

Scott also appointed himself organiser of everything that happened after the show.

He had created a detailed itinerary involving drinks, dinner, football on television, cocktails and a late-night stop, with times attached to each stage.

Chris recognised the system immediately because Scott had done the same thing on previous group holidays.

The first night had already ignored the plan

Their arrival had not gone entirely to schedule.

After a long train journey, Chris had been desperate for food and discovered most kitchens had closed.

Even a fish-and-chip shop turned him away.

The group eventually found a Turkish restaurant, accompanied by a strange soundtrack which included the Kidz Bop version of Justin Bieber’s “Yummy”.

It was not quite the glamorous Newquay comeback they had pictured.

Stupid Street moved to the seaside

One of the first classic features to be adapted was Stupid Street.

In London, a member of the team would go onto the same street and ask members of the public questions with apparently obvious answers.

In Cornwall it became Stupid Strip.

Producer Helena headed into the centre of Newquay to find out what people knew about Scott and Chris and whether they were aware the pair were leaving Radio 1.

The answers maintained the original feature’s proud tradition of people saying things with enormous confidence and very little accuracy.

Even going for a swim became a problem

Some of the team wanted to go into the sea after the programme.

Scott did not.

His concern was not really the water.

He did not want colleagues seeing him in swimwear, or seeing them in theirs.

The debate became even less appealing when the team mentioned reports about large numbers of crabs around Cornish beaches.

The plan rapidly downgraded from a proper swim to perhaps dipping feet in the water.

The quiz went fully coastal

The Who Game also returned during the Newquay week, before the quiz went fully coastal.

One round included Band or Sand, then questions covered waves and surfing before familiar songs were transformed into sea-shanty versions.

Nickelback’s “Rockstar”, AWOLNATION’s “Sail” and Avicii all appeared in maritime form.

It was the first day of the Newquay farewell week and already the show sounded less like a London studio programme and more like a group holiday being accidentally broadcast nationwide.
