24 August 2022: Beccy returned for the longest Bamboleo Wednesday as Dean and Vicky asked the final questions

Bamboleo Wednesday became a full farewell ritual

The penultimate show opened by going back through the history of Bamboleo Wednesday.

The tradition had started with little more than Scott deciding the middle of the week needed the Gipsy Kings.

There was never a strong logical reason for it.

That was part of the point.

Over time listeners began expecting “Bamboleo” every Wednesday and the show turned it into a motivational ritual.

Scott and Chris had even gone to the Royal Albert Hall to hear the Gipsy Kings perform it live.

For the final Wednesday, they stretched the feature out into its longest and most celebratory version.

Beccy came home

Beccy Huxtable returned to the studio.

The programme replayed clips from her years on the show, including the endless jokes, awkward celebrity encounters and the period when she became as recognisable to listeners as the presenters.

Beccy said being back at Radio 1 felt like coming home.

She had moved into a different BBC career but still regarded the station as a special place.

Scott also used the appearance to try to increase her Instagram followers, because sentiment could not be allowed to interrupt the show’s instinct for a pointless campaign.

Dean and Vicky walked into the slot early

Incoming afternoon presenters Dean McCullough and Vicky Hawkesworth joined Scott and Chris before officially taking over.

Scott joked about refusing to leave and having to be physically removed from the building.

Dean and Vicky then played Ask Me Anything, using their chance to question the outgoing hosts.

Dean asked for career advice.

Scott’s answer was simple: always prepare the show, even when it sounds as though nobody has prepared anything.

He then added much less transferable advice about not leaving underwear in a sink at Radio 1’s Big Weekend.

They asked what was best and worst about each other

The questions became more personal.

Scott described Chris as one of the most loyal friends he had ever had and somebody who would never let him down.

The “worst” thing was that Chris copied his aftershave.

The habit went back to a visit from Pixie Lott, who once told Scott he smelled good.

Chris promptly bought the same fragrance.

Scott complained that this cheapened the effect because people could no longer associate the smell only with him.

The exchange summed up the friendship neatly.

Even when asked to criticise each other, the answer became a compliment followed by an argument about cologne.

The last day was now unavoidable

Scott admitted he had listened to their chosen final song in the car and was now absolutely convinced they had picked the right one.

By the end of Wednesday, almost every long-running feature had been closed.

All that remained was the final show itself.
