16 August 2022: Sarah and Pete fooled Scott in the final Brother or Lover

Rain returned with perfect timing

After weeks of hot weather, Scott and Chris arrived soaked through and amused by how many people were posting pictures of rain as if Britain had never seen it before.

It gave the start of the show an unexpectedly autumnal feeling just as the Radio 1 run was reaching its end.

The final Brother or Lover had two animal experts

The last edition of Brother or Lover introduced Sarah and Pete.

Sarah worked internationally on animal-welfare reform and described herself as a zoologist.

Her favourite animal was the wolf, which gave the show an opportunity to complain about the bad public relations wolves had received from children’s films.

Pete was a zookeeper.

He preferred bears.

Together they sounded almost too perfectly matched.

The question was whether that was because they shared a family or a relationship.

Every answer seemed to point somewhere different

Sarah and Pete had travelled together in 2017.

Sarah was considered the cleaner of the two around the house.

She thought Pete resembled a bear.

She also said she would be professionally confident looking after an elephant’s trunk, allowing the feature to end with exactly the level of innuendo it had spent years encouraging.

Scott heard virtually no romantic chemistry and locked in brother.

Chris and most of the production team went the other way.

Scott was completely wrong

The reveal was decisive.

Pete was Sarah’s lover.

They had been together for eight years and married for one.

Scott immediately had to apologise for declaring there was “zero romance” between a married couple.

It was an appropriately strong final edition of a game which worked best when perfectly ordinary couples sounded emotionally detached and siblings accidentally sounded intimate.

Attention turned to the final record

The show also began openly discussing what Scott and Chris should play as their final song on Radio 1.

They had spent years introducing records, breaking artists and attaching songs to particular moments in the programme.

Choosing one track to close everything now felt unexpectedly difficult.

The answer would stay secret for another week.
