7 July 2022: Troy Hawke discovered an eight-year coincidence and Superfan Steve met Andy Murray again

Troy Hawke had found an impossible coincidence

Comedian Troy Hawke had recently stood outside the BBC greeting people in his unmistakably formal style.

One cyclist had appeared to ignore him.

That would normally have been the end of it.

Instead, the cyclist contacted Troy with an extraordinary detail.

He had also been present in one of Troy’s earliest Greeters Guild videos, filmed outside Wilko roughly eight years earlier.

The same man had therefore managed to cross Troy’s path in two separate videos, years apart, in completely different locations.

Troy described it as an almost impossible accident of fate.

Scott and Chris loved the absurdity of a random cyclist becoming an accidental recurring character in the Greeters Guild universe.

Old features were remixed into Harry Styles

The programme’s increasingly reflective mood continued when the team turned the middle section of Harry Styles’ “As It Was” into a list of old Scott Mills Show features.

Scott already did this privately in the studio.

Now everyone joined in.

Names such as Bumble, One Night With Laura, Granny Tinder, The Who Game, Coxipedia, Bangers and other half-forgotten features were squeezed into the rhythm.

Some entries on the show’s own online history were so obscure that even Scott could barely remember them.

One was Fish Pie Soup.

Another was Livestock Lounging.

The exercise became both a joke and a genuinely effective reminder of just how many ideas the programme had burned through over the years.

How often did single people change their sheets?

A conversation with Scott’s friend Nate turned unexpectedly into a survey of bed-linen standards.

When Nate had been single, he could apparently go around a month without changing his sheets.

Producer Amy was horrified and said weekly was normal.

Scott was challenged over whether he changed his own bedding at all.

The team found it difficult to picture him calmly wrestling with a duvet cover.

Listeners then made Nate’s month look comparatively respectable by admitting to much longer gaps.

One claimed two years.

That answer ended the competition rather decisively.

Superfan Steve met Andy Murray

Friday archive material was previewed with one of the programme’s most uncomfortable celebrity encounters.

The premise of Superfan Steve was that a star believed they were meeting an obsessive listener on the phone.

The listener was actually Chris in another studio.

With Andy Murray, “Steve” repeatedly buzzed in during a quiz, supplied aggressively specific answers and referred to the Wimbledon viewing area as “Judy Murray’s mound”.

Andy stayed characteristically dry throughout.

The questions covered his football ambitions, rackets, getting locked in a toilet before Sports Personality of the Year and the exact sequence of the final game when he won Wimbledon in 2013.

Only afterwards did Scott reveal that Steve was not real.

Chris emerged and admitted he was genuinely a huge Murray fan.

Years later, the clip remained almost impossible for them to hear without cringing.

Thursday ended in the pub

Bangers went to New Malden, where listener Joe was spending a day off doing a crossword in the pub garden.

It was a suitably low-stakes end to a show that had somehow combined an eight-year coincidence, bedding hygiene, Harry Styles and psychological warfare against Andy Murray.
