7 February 2022: Empty movie mugs and coconut sound effects drove Scott and Chris mad

Television had too many things Scott could no longer ignore

Scott had been watching *Trigger Point* when a familiar television trick annoyed him.

Characters turned on the TV at precisely the right moment to see a breaking-news report explaining the exact story they were involved in.

They never accidentally switched on something irrelevant.

They watched the useful exposition and immediately turned it off.

That started a much wider list of film and television irritations.

Texts between main characters often appeared with no previous conversation history.

Groups of villains conveniently attacked heroes one at a time.

People ordered huge breakfasts, took one piece of toast and walked out.

Dates in restaurants sometimes left before the food had even arrived.

And characters arranged to meet without ever discussing a time or place.

Empty mugs were impossible to unsee

Listeners added their own frustrations.

Coffee cups and mugs almost never seemed to contain any liquid.

Actors waved them around in ways that would have covered the room if there had genuinely been hot coffee inside.

Phone scenes were another giveaway when the screen clearly showed no active call.

Scott and Chris admitted that, once somebody pointed these details out, it was difficult not to notice them forever.

Coconuts had ruined movie sound effects for Chris

A visit to the Harry Potter studio tour had taught Chris about Foley artists, who recreate everyday noises for films.

Footsteps, clothing and movement could all be rebuilt in a sound studio rather than recorded on set.

Chris could no longer watch certain scenes without picturing somebody standing off camera making noises with shoes, stones or coconut shells.

The knowledge had made film sound both more impressive and slightly ridiculous.

The Who Game returned

Monday’s Who Game revived things which once felt unavoidable and had since disappeared from everyday conversation.

Suggestions included Connell’s chain from *Normal People*, Digital Spy forums, the Area 51 storming meme, grow-your-own boyfriends, Madonna falling down the stairs at the BRIT Awards and the brilliantly named fuel-crisis reporter Phil McCann.

The entire point was that each memory produced an immediate reaction of: *oh, yes, that*.

Amy asked whether things floated

The quiz moved into Does It Float? after producer Amy had apparently been experimenting in the bath.

Wood floated.

Raw, unstuffed pasta did not.

A paperback book should float initially, even though Amy had already discovered that dropping one into bathwater was not a great idea.

The second round returned to forgotten Live Lounges, including Dizzee Rascal covering The Ting Tings and N-Dubz taking on The Script.
