7 October 2021: Heads Down, Thumbs Up finally made sense as Chris relived meeting Christian Grey

Ben finally explained Heads Down, Thumbs Up

The previous day’s British Squid Game had exposed a strange gap in Scott and Chris’s childhood knowledge.

They had never played Heads Down, Thumbs Up.

Listeners were outraged.

So Ben came on to explain it properly.

The rules are simple.

Pupils put their heads down on desks and stick their thumbs up.

A small group walk around and each selects somebody by pressing or pinching a thumb.

The chosen pupils then have to guess who touched them.

Guess correctly and places are swapped.

Ben somehow made this explanation take considerably longer than the game itself.

Scott and Chris interrupted repeatedly because every extra sentence seemed to create a new question.

Ben also admitted he used to cheat.

That at least made sense immediately.

The UK Squid Game now had another event

Once the rules were understood, Heads Down, Thumbs Up could officially enter Scott’s British Squid Game.

The stakes would obviously be much higher.

Scott joked that Ben’s cheating technique might become genuinely useful when getting an answer wrong had consequences beyond simply staying seated.

The feature had successfully turned one of the gentlest classroom time-fillers into survival strategy.

Jade Thirlwall hosted Little Mix Real or No Real

Jade Thirlwall then supplied the questions for a Little Mix edition of Real or No Real.

One statement claimed bandmate Perrie Edwards had no sense of smell.

Scott and Chris thought they remembered hearing this before.

They chose real.

Correct.

Another claim said Jade’s nickname in the band was The Archaeologist because she watched Indiana Jones every week.

The nickname sounded far too elaborate to be genuine.

They chose no real.

Correct again.

The round continued with more apparently plausible Little Mix trivia designed to make Scott and Chris doubt knowledge they thought they had.

The archive returned to Jamie Dornan

The day’s Golden Moment went back eight years to one of Chris’s most famously awkward celebrity encounters.

The transcript calls the guest Christian Grey, but the actor is clearly Jamie Dornan.

Chris had been sent to interview him around the height of Fifty Shades fame.

Before the interview, Chris had been so nervous he thought the material might be unusable.

That was exactly why it became memorable.

Jamie Dornan could hear the nerves

Chris told Dornan he normally spent his time down the pub with his friends rather than sitting in rooms full of cameras interviewing globally famous actors.

Dornan gently questioned why Chris found the situation so frightening.

Chris kept trying to explain.

The nerves remained audible in almost every answer.

Scott remembered the clip travelling around the world afterwards, with international broadcasters asking to speak to “the Christian Grey guy”.

Chris had originally assumed the interview was a mess.

It became one of the programme’s defining archive moments.

The embarrassment was much easier to enjoy years later

Scott always found old clips of himself difficult to hear.

Chris was the same.

Still, enough time had passed that the Jamie Dornan interview could now be appreciated for exactly what made it work.

A very normal person had suddenly been placed opposite one of the world’s most talked-about actors.

The awkwardness was genuine.

That was why listeners loved it.
