The Birthday Game: Mandy
Mandy from Stoke-on-Trent turned 65 and had been retired for eight years.
She strongly recommended retirement to anybody worried about filling their time.
Her activities included travelling around the world, singing in choirs, canoeing, paddleboarding, volunteering as a factory tour guide and crown-green bowling.
Mandy liked the pop, disco and glam rock of her 1970s teenage years.
Her first spin was the Beatles’ From Me to You, number one in 1963.
She liked it but chose to continue.
The second was Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa’s One Kiss, winner of the 2019 Brit Award for British Single.
Mandy gambled again.
Her compulsory final song was Olive’s You’re Not Alone, number one in 1997.
Mandy said the exact song mattered less than being part of the programme on her 65th birthday and accepted the result warmly.
KT Tunstall
KT Tunstall joined Scott almost 20 years after the release of Black Horse and the Cherry Tree.
Scott remembered playing that song, Suddenly I See and Other Side of the World heavily during the beginning of her career.
KT was preparing to receive an award and said the pair could resume their conversation despite not having seen each other for around 17 or 18 years.
The Same Interview
Scott asked KT questions originally put to her in an old pop magazine.
Her current unusual snack was a bowl containing tuna, watermelon and avocado with oil and pepper.
Her earlier answer had been hummus and whisky, a combination she no longer consumed.
Asked about strange celebrity memories, she recalled visiting James Blunt’s Ibiza home and seeing a prominent photograph of him wearing a leopard-print leotard with thigh-high boots.
Fashion then and now
KT described her current style as “Matrix casual”: inspired by Neo and Trinity but using looser clothing rather than skin-tight costumes.
Her favourite item was a pair of Japanese trousers with fin-like panels below the knees.
Two decades earlier, she had described her style as vintage sparkle with old brown biker boots.
What comes next
KT revealed plans for a major celebration marking both the 20th anniversary of her first album and her 50th birthday.
She also confirmed that new music would follow and described it as the beginning of a new era.
