Chris had apparently started going out with listeners
Scott wanted a ruling on something Chris had done the previous week.
After the show, the pair had a meeting in a pub.
Scott then left for the gym.
Chris had several hours to kill before meeting his wife at the theatre.
Two men at another table recognised him and asked for a photograph.
Chris thought simply posing and walking away felt awkward.
So he invited them for a beer.
So far, Scott could understand it.
Then the evening escalated.
One beer became a three-hour mini pub crawl
Chris needed to travel towards the theatre.
He told the two listeners they were welcome to come.
They did.
The three got on a train together and travelled roughly 40 minutes.
Then they found another pub.
They continued drinking.
The original photograph was eventually taken about three hours later.
Scott thought this was bizarre.
Chris thought it felt completely natural.
The listeners had been nice.
He had time to kill.
Why not have a few drinks?
Callers mostly sided with Chris.
Scott realised the story said less about appropriate celebrity boundaries than about Chris being exactly the sort of person who could accidentally acquire two temporary friends on a train.
Chris Martin simply walked into the studio
Then the entire programme was interrupted.
Chris Martin from Coldplay appeared without warning.
He had known Scott and Chris were on air and wandered in.
For a moment the show stopped functioning normally.
Scott went for a hug.
Chris Stark ended up in an awkward handshake.
Everyone seemed to be moving on slightly different timing.
Scott later broke the contact down like sports footage.
Somewhere in the confusion, Chris Martin had put a hand on Scott’s side.
Scott described it less elegantly:
Chris Martin grabbed my fat.
Bamboleo somehow took priority over Coldplay
The timing was even stranger because the programme was approaching Bamboleo Wednesday.
Scott and Chris essentially welcomed one of the world’s biggest singers, exchanged a few awkward words and then returned to the Gipsy Kings.
Listeners could not believe it.
One message pointed out that most workplaces do not have Chris Martin casually appearing during a normal Wednesday afternoon.
Scott later realised Martin had probably expected slightly more conversation.
Instead he had wandered in at the exact moment a weekly nonsense ritual needed to happen.
Bamboleo won.
Bangers followed the celebrity interruption
Caller Shannon had attended an England match with her dad and was still on an adrenaline high.
She ended up choosing between Scott and Chris’s Bangers while the presenters continued processing what had happened minutes earlier.
For most listeners, meeting Chris Martin would be the event of the week.
For Scott and Chris, it had somehow become something which happened between two links.
