The total had climbed again
Scott and Chris returned after the weekend still trying to process the previous week’s Lolathon.
When they had come off air, the fundraising total had already passed half a million pounds.
More donations continued to clear afterwards.
The new figure was:
£536,786.
Both presenters were genuinely overwhelmed.
They repeatedly thanked listeners, particularly because 2021 remained a difficult time for many people to give money at all.
All 24 hours were available to hear again
BBC Sounds had kept the marathon, including the much looser overnight sections which could not have happened during normal daytime Radio 1.
Scott had barely thought about listening back until listeners began reminding him of moments he had almost forgotten.
One of those came somewhere around the middle of the night.
The programme had half an hour to fill.
Everybody was exhausted.
That was how BattleNips happened.
BattleNips was Battleships played on Chris’s chest
The idea required a grid drawn across Chris’s T-shirt.
Listeners phoned with coordinates.
Instead of trying to sink naval vessels, they were trying to locate Chris’s nipples.
A caller might shout B2.
The team would announce a hit or miss.
Even in the transcript Scott and Chris sounded slightly unsure whether they were remembering the game correctly.
That was probably the clearest sign of how tired everybody had become.
Lewis Capaldi received a full musical
Another Lolathon highlight was Lewis Capaldi: The Musical, created by a young theatre company.
The production researched Lewis’s life and turned real people around him into characters.
One of his old teachers, Miss Foster, discovered she had been portrayed in the show and called Radio 1 after seeing clips on social media.
She found the whole thing hilarious.
The children involved had put far more work into it than anybody expected from a deliberately silly Comic Relief idea.
Scott thought the musical deserved a life beyond the broadcast.
Unexpected Covers kept arriving
Artists had also recorded unusual cover versions for the event.
There had been too much material to fit into the original 24 hours.
The Snuts supplied a barbershop-style contribution from a bathroom.
Tones and I also recorded something for the show.
Scott and Chris used the Monday after Lolathon almost like an extended credits sequence, playing things which had been squeezed out of the live marathon and thanking everybody who contributed.
