1 March 2021: Matthew and Simon fooled almost everyone on Brother or Lover

Lolathon suddenly felt very close

March began with Scott and Chris realising their next 24-hour Lolathon for Comic Relief was no longer something sitting comfortably in the future.

The big broadcast would start at 9am on Thursday 11 March.

The week beforehand would be full of material designed to make listeners laugh, building towards Scott and Chris staying on air for 24 hours.

One of the plans involved reviving Superfan Steve for a Little Mix quiz, with Chris secretly supplying the answers from another studio so Steve could appear impossibly knowledgeable.

Another depended on listeners sending in the most awkward dating-app exchanges they had ever received.

Scott teased that an extremely famous actor might be persuaded to read them aloud.

Matthew and Simon arrived for Brother or Lover

The first major game of the month featured Matthew and Simon.

Were they brothers?

Or a couple?

The clues were carefully chosen.

They had attended weddings together.

Matthew said he would definitely not get a matching tattoo with Simon.

When asked whether they had ever worn each other’s underwear, Matthew said not that he could remember — although it might have happened a long time ago.

That answer immediately sounded sibling-like.

Then Chris asked Simon what Matthew normally ate for breakfast.

Simon answered scrambled eggs.

That level of domestic knowledge pulled the team back towards lovers.

Most of the team backed lovers — and they were right

The team split, but most eventually chose lovers.

Listeners were much less convinced, with several focusing on the shared-underwear answer and the references to family weddings.

The reveal:

lovers.

Matthew and Simon had been together for around four years.

Scott was particularly pleased because Brother or Lover often punished anybody who became too confident too early.

This time the domestic breakfast knowledge had genuinely been the useful clue.

The Who Game remembered inflatable furniture

Monday also meant The Who Game.

Rubbery pencils, public-transport habits and old childhood rhymes all returned.

One of the strongest memories was the period when inflatable furniture seemed completely normal.

At one point, somebody admitted, half the lounge had effectively been inflatable.

It was exactly the kind of trend the feature was built for: once everywhere, then suddenly gone.

House Plant or Harry Potter Spell made the quiz

Don’t Look It Up introduced House Plant or Harry Potter Spell.

A name such as *Rhipsalis ramulosa* could plausibly sound like botanical Latin or something shouted at Hogwarts.

Scott admitted he was not especially qualified in either field.

His own houseplant knowledge included a low-maintenance snake plant named Susie and at least one decorative fake plant which Chris considered suspiciously cabbage-like.

The round was difficult enough to become an instant favourite.
