23 February 2021: Lolathon returned as Ruth unknowingly dated two brothers

Lolathon was coming back

Scott and Chris opened with major show news.

Lolathon would return for Comic Relief.

The previous versions had involved extremely long broadcasts, celebrities, comedians and the sort of ideas which only seemed sensible once everybody was exhausted.

This time the pandemic made the planning much harder.

The team could not simply invite anybody into the building or recreate every stunt from earlier years.

The ambition remained the same.

Make people laugh after an exceptionally difficult year and raise money while doing it.

The new version would build towards another 24 hours

The event would ramp up across a week in March before Scott and Chris attempted another 24-hour broadcast.

They remembered the point in the previous Lolathon where tiredness removed almost every filter.

Scott joked that those middle-of-the-night hours were probably more fun for listeners than for the presenters.

The team had already recorded new material involving Superfan Steve and Little Mix.

They also remembered tracking down Fyre Festival’s Andy King for an earlier Lolathon and getting him to revisit his most famous story.

Scott and Chris were excited enough that the announcement itself felt like the beginning of the event.

Ruth accidentally dated two brothers

The date-fail feature returned.

Ruth had been seeing one man.

The relationship eventually fizzled out.

Several months later she began seeing somebody else.

Things were going well again.

Then a Snapchat arrived showing the second man with the first.

Ruth asked how they knew each other.

They were brothers.

She had dated both without realising it.

The surname was common enough that the connection had never occurred to her.

Once she discovered it, Ruth blocked both of them.

Scott immediately decided this was an advanced version of Brother or Lover nobody had ever intended to create.

Another caller fell asleep on the toilet

The feature continued with listeners whose romantic prospects collapsed in much less genealogically complicated ways.

One caller’s story involved falling asleep on the toilet.

The entire point of the feature was how quickly a promising connection could move from “this might actually work” to something impossible to recover from.

Jo had owned a van for 18 months before discovering the loop

Blow Your Own Trumpet included one of the smallest achievements in the feature’s history.

Jo had a van with an armrest.

For a year and a half she had apparently accepted it in one position.

Then she noticed a little loop.

She pulled it.

The armrest moved.

Scott and Chris celebrated as though Jo had invented the mechanism herself.

That was exactly why Blow Your Own Trumpet existed.

Sometimes the thing making somebody happy really was just finding a hidden loop in a van.

Bangers pleaded for The Veronicas

The show also tried to persuade somebody to choose The Veronicas during Bangers.

As ever, the feature had a very simple purpose.

Two songs.

One listener.

One decision.

Scott and Chris could still turn it into a personal competition.
