Scott’s Zoom crashing immediately became chaotic
Scott had promised to invade listeners’ lockdown quizzes and had already joined two by the time the next show arrived.
The first involved the usual video-call chaos, including somebody arriving late. The second was intended as a birthday surprise, with one participant screaming when Scott suddenly appeared.
Scott was supposed to take over the music round but discovered he had brought the questions from the wrong quiz. The listener hosting it was so surprised to have him there that she initially did not have the heart to point out that none of his questions matched the ones she had written.
There was also the standard Zoom behaviour: people shouting out answers, a dog interrupting and participants asking Scott to show them around his house.
Lockdown was bringing exes back from nowhere
The show continued its thread about old partners suddenly sending messages during lockdown.
Listeners had received everything from apparently harmless “how are you?” messages to much stranger attempts at reconnecting after years of silence.
Scott and Chris were suspicious of the timing. Isolation had created plenty of time for people to scroll back through old photographs and contacts, but that did not necessarily mean reopening those relationships was a good idea.
The discussion developed into the question of what people actually do with old photos. Deleting every trace of an ex felt dramatic, but deliberately keeping them on display while in a new relationship seemed equally strange.
Don’t Look It Up went back to old X Factor auditions
The quiz raided another corner of pop-culture memory: old *X Factor* auditions.
It rewarded anyone who had absorbed far too much reality television over the years and again relied on memory rather than searching.
Jason Derulo received Scott’s vocal-coach treatment
Scott also revisited one of his sessions with Jason Derulo.
As with Freya Ridings the previous day, the joke depended on Scott treating a successful singer as though the missing ingredient in their career was a few instructions from him.
He broke down the performance, encouraged more emotion and behaved as if he had genuinely improved the record.
Katy Perry mixed from Los Angeles
The day’s guest mix came from Katy Perry in Los Angeles.
Katy explained that she had reached the point in lockdown where she was tired of performing from the same rooms and showing audiences the same pieces of her house. She had therefore started using a small soundstage with a trusted creative team so remote appearances could feel more like performances again.
Her selections included Doja Cat’s *Say So*, Megan Thee Stallion and Beyoncé’s *Savage* remix, and Childish Gambino’s *This Is America*.
Tiger King inevitably entered the conversation. Katy had spoken to Carole Baskin on a Zoom call and confirmed that Carole knew exactly how recognisable her “cool cats and kittens” greeting had become. Katy also enjoyed the fact that *Roar* now seemed tailor-made for any conversation involving big cats.
The mix was a snapshot of pop culture in the middle of lockdown: Zoom calls, *Tiger King*, remote performances and some of the biggest records of 2020 all colliding in one segment.
