28 April 2020: Joe Root supplied mancave anthems as Dickie laughed again

Scott’s boyfriend had job news

A day earlier, Scott had revealed his furloughed boyfriend was considering temporary work including fruit picking.

Listeners wanted an update immediately.

By Tuesday, another possible job had entered the picture:

delivery driving.

Scott treated every text and callback as though the show were following a major recruitment process.

Chris found the contrast funny because listeners knew Scott’s boyfriend only through domestic stories and now suddenly pictured him working in fields or making deliveries.

The show promised to keep following whichever route became real.

Dickie was still impossible not to laugh with

Dickie, discovered through the cider company Dickie’s Dribble, returned again.

Scott and Chris had originally called because the business name sounded funny.

Dickie’s laugh had become the real feature.

Months later, very little preparation was required.

Get Dickie on the phone.

Give him something mildly amusing.

Wait.

His laughter did the rest.

The show’s relationship with him had developed from a one-off Funny Business call into a recurring source of instant warmth.

JC Stewart woke up to Jennifer Aniston

Singer-songwriter JC Stewart joined after something extraordinary happened to one of his lockdown videos.

JC had rewritten the Friends theme around quarantine life.

The new version joked about staying in all day, looking in the fridge and binge-watching *Tiger King*.

The video spread widely online.

Then Jennifer Aniston shared it to her Instagram Story.

JC did not even realise immediately because she had not tagged him.

Friends began messaging to ask whether he had seen it.

The video had reached millions of views.

Scott joked that, at 23, JC might already have peaked.

JC suggested becoming Jennifer Aniston’s toy boy would be one possible next career move.

Fleet Services returned to glory

The archive’s golden moment revisited the opening of the Scott Mills Bridge at Fleet Services.

Scott had once delivered an absurdly grand opening speech for a pedestrian bridge at a motorway service station.

Years later, listeners still sent photographs from the plaque.

Some deliberately timed motorway journeys so they could drive beneath the bridge while listening to Scott.

The structure had even survived a later fire and refurbishment.

Scott loved that a radio joke had become an actual piece of roadside pilgrimage.

Joe Root was live from the mancave

The remote DJ set came from Joe Root, England cricket captain.

Joe was broadcasting from his mancave, complete with pool table and a modest amount of cricket memorabilia.

Scott imagined a much more self-celebratory shrine.

Joe’s room sounded surprisingly normal.

His music leaned towards indie and big singalong records.

One choice was dedicated to teammate Ben Stokes.

Scott learned about sledging

Joe also explained sledging.

Cricketers tried to distract or unsettle opponents with comments while they were batting.

The modern version could still be funny or cutting, although stump microphones meant players needed to be more careful.

Joe admitted many of the best lines could not be repeated on Radio 1.

One relatively safe insult had compared him with Ellen DeGeneres.

Scott was delighted because he had received the same comparison.

Without realising it, he had apparently been sledged for years.

The show briefly attempted its own roleplay.

Scott was much less intimidating than an international wicketkeeper.
