22 December 2016: Dial-a-Carol finally answers from America

The carollers pick up

The Breakfast show calls the University of Illinois’s free Dial-a-Carol service again. A recorded message warns that high demand may create a 15-minute wait, but Scott remains on the line until a volunteer answers and asks for a name, location and request.

The result is an intimate American performance heard live across Britain. After earlier calls with Judge Rinder and M.O, the service has become one of the year’s most persistent festive threads, with the hold music and cheerful students now as familiar as the carols.

Michael Fassbender discusses an unfortunate search result

Highlights from Grimmy’s interview with Michael Fassbender cover Assassin’s Creed and the actor’s desire for a break after a decade of almost continuous filming. On the interview day, however, the leading search result about him concerns flatulence rather than the film.

Fassbender explains the on-set remark that created the story and takes the attention in good humour. The programme also revisits Will Smith discussing Christmas while promoting Collateral Beauty, including an attempt at a seasonal song.

Real or No Real reaches Christmas television

The day’s Real or No Real asks whether Mary Berry has secured work as the voice of a baking-themed satnav after appearing in the unsuccessful American version of Bake Off. Her reassuring delivery makes the invention feel entirely plausible.

Door 22 of the Whooovent Calendar opens as listeners finish work for the year. Scott and Chris pull more crackers, monitor Storm Barbara and prepare for their final Breakfast show before Christmas Eve.
