Friday Extra Show: the archive moved to 2013
Extra podcast edition
The previous Friday had gone back to 2012.
This week Scott and Chris opened 2013.
They immediately decided it had been a particularly productive year for the programme.
The archive list included old Innuendo Bingo, unexplained contacts in people’s phones and one of Chris’s most suspiciously cheap holidays.
Lorraine Kelly played Innuendo Bingo
The first selection brought back Lorraine Kelly.
Scott described her as one of the people he had always wanted in the game.
Lorraine understood exactly what was required.
Chris sat opposite her.
Both filled their mouths with water.
The clips moved through television language involving unusual foods, snooker balls and accidental innuendo.
Lorraine tried to remain composed.
Scott repeatedly encouraged her to stop being polite and aim the water directly at Chris.
By the end, the studio was soaked.
Years later, Scott still remembered Lorraine as one of the best sports the feature had booked.
Nobody knew who Fish Pie Sue was
The next old idea came from the unexplained names people stored in their phones after nights out, work events or holidays.
A listener had a contact saved as Fish Pie Sue.
She genuinely could not remember who Sue was or why fish pie had become the identifying detail.
Radio 1 called the number.
Sue answered.
The two women attempted to work out where they had met.
Neither could solve it.
Scott joined the call because he became genuinely invested in the mystery.
Had there been a fish pie?
Had Sue made one?
Had they met somewhere serving it?
Nothing fitted.
The feature ended without a solution.
That was part of why the strange name survived in the archive.
Chris bought a £25 holiday
Then came an old deal Scott had been convinced was too good to be real.
Chris paid around £25 for a holiday.
Scott expected disaster.
The show mocked up imaginary news coverage and even worried enough about the company for Chris to speak to people before travelling.
Then Chris actually went.
He came home alive.
The holiday existed.
For somebody used to Scott’s much more elaborate travel planning, Chris’s ability to book something almost impossibly cheap and simply see what happened remained remarkable.
Friday Extra was becoming a proper chronology
By using a different year each Friday, the podcast was accidentally creating a second archive alongside the daily show.
2012 had produced Scotty the Fish.
2013 produced Fish Pie Sue and a £25 holiday.
The format made old features feel current again without pretending they were new.
