9 May 2019: David discovered he was conceived in a French ambulance

Chris returned after being replaced

Chris came back after the show had used an actress to represent him on Wednesday.

He had heard some of it.

The replacement sounded suspiciously like the version of himself he wished he actually sounded like.

Scott admitted the experiment had gone well enough to make a permanent substitution slightly worrying.

Chris’s bigger concern was discovering everything else he had missed, including extreme Newsbeat questions, Bastille’s ukulele performance and the Liverpool aftermath.

Where Do You Think They Were? needed more families

Scott made an unusually direct appeal for new participants.

The feature could only continue if listeners were willing to put themselves and at least one parent through the conversation.

The current supply was running low.

Scott begged people to email if they had a parent willing to reconstruct the story.

Then David, 27, demonstrated exactly why the feature was worth saving.

His dad Ed joined from a story set in France.

Ed was serving with the French fire service

Ed explained that he had worked with the French fire service, where fire and ambulance responsibilities were combined.

He had needed to pass an exam before being allowed to work on ambulance duties.

On the day he received the result, he wanted to celebrate.

Scott immediately became interested in the uniform and whether Ed had looked like the sort of firefighter found on charity calendars.

Ed was perfectly happy to encourage that image.

The celebration moved into the ambulance

Ed and David’s future mum were around the emergency vehicles.

They climbed into the back of an ambulance.

The doors closed.

Ed described the rest with relatively little embarrassment.

Scott realised Radio 1 had found an ambulance baby.

The practical details made it better.

The same uniform could be used across ambulance and fire duties.

The vehicle itself was not moving.

This was not conception during an emergency call.

It was simply the least private way Ed could celebrate passing his exam.

David sounded stunned.

Listeners immediately ranked the story among the feature’s best.

Sam needed a girlfriend for his nan

The show also continued helping Sam, whose grandmother Patricia constantly asked why he did not have a girlfriend.

Sam had joked that Patricia even tried offering him her widowed friends.

Scott’s solution was to recruit listeners willing to pretend to be Sam’s girlfriend.

Before anybody spoke to the real Patricia, they needed rehearsal.

Chris therefore played an aggressively suspicious version of Sam’s nan.

He asked whether the caller was after his money, whether she could keep Sam satisfied and when they planned to get engaged.

The auditions became far more intimidating than the genuine grandmother was likely to be.

The next stage would be putting one of the fake girlfriends through to Patricia herself.

Eurovision week was about to separate Scott and Chris

Scott also confirmed the usual May split.

He was heading away with the Eurovision team.

The normal Scott-and-Chris show would disappear for the following week.

They would return together after the contest.

Chris pretended to be completely relaxed about Scott leaving him for his “other friends” once a year.

The complaint would be ready when Scott returned.
