25 April 2019: Cardiff was declared the birthplace of the sleeping bag

Chris was absent again

Scott opened by noticing the studio was missing somebody.

Chris was off, although he insisted by phone that the absence had been planned and everybody who actually needed to know already knew.

Scott was less convinced that he personally had been told clearly enough.

Chris promised he could still participate in Bangers later.

Scott pointed out that this suggested he was not impossibly busy.

Clara Amfo was in Jamaica for Bond

The big entertainment announcement came from Bond 25.

Clara Amfo was in Jamaica as the production unveiled more information about Daniel Craig’s next James Bond film.

Scott openly admitted he was not the person to translate movie news.

So Ali Plumb joined him.

Ali explained that the most important fact was Daniel Craig returning for what was expected to be his final Bond film.

Reports had circulated around the working title Shatterhand, although that was not confirmed as the actual title.

Scott wanted to know who would be Bond after Craig before the current film had even been made.

Ali told him to let this one happen first.

The programme also joked about which current musicians might eventually sing the theme.

Cardiff received the Stark Guide

Listener Helen was going to Cardiff and wanted the show’s guide.

Chris had recorded it before taking the day off.

The Stark Guide moved through the city’s history, famous names, nightlife and practical social rules.

One of the strongest pieces of advice was to thank the bus driver, usually with the familiar Welsh “cheers, drive”.

Chippy Lane and its late-night food also featured heavily.

Scott knew any attempt to summarise Cardiff on Radio 1 would immediately be fact-checked by Welsh listeners.

They did not disappoint.

Shirley Bassey and local legends appeared

The guide naturally celebrated Shirley Bassey and other Cardiff connections.

It also contained the usual mixture of genuine history and jokes which Chris delivered with identical confidence.

At one point the narration encouraged listeners to imagine encountering famous Cardiff names in places they were very unlikely actually to appear.

The local audience sent corrections while still enjoying the attempt.

The sleeping bag claim produced the title

The final flourish declared Cardiff the birthplace of both the sleeping bag and Captain Morgan rum.

The guide also pointed out that Captain Morgan had not really held the naval rank implied by the brand name.

Chris treated that as inspirational.

In Cardiff, apparently, you could become whoever you wanted to be.

He ended with “shwmae”, then discovered listeners had opinions about exactly how and when the Welsh greeting should be used.

For Scott, that proved the Stark Guide had worked.

People were correcting it.
