1 February 2019: Billy’s plumber-and-postwoman conception story got even more explicit

Friday Extra Show: Billy’s story had more to give

Extra podcast edition

The first February podcast picked up directly from the final regular show of January.

Billy’s mum Serena had already turned Where Do You Think They Were? into one of the feature’s most memorable editions.

She had been a postwoman in Oxfordshire.

Billy’s future dad had been a plumber who first caught her attention while arguing confidently with her father during a central-heating installation.

Serena then decided to pursue him.

Valentine’s Day was approaching, and working for the postal service gave her an obvious route.

She wrote a poem.

The plumbing poem was even ruder in full

The weekday programme had included the basic outline.

The Friday Extra Show could play the longer, less daytime-friendly version.

Serena’s poem used plumbing language as flirting.

She imagined being the spanner he could hold, the radiator he could position and worked in references to leaks and lagging.

Billy listened as his mother performed material she had written decades earlier specifically to get his father’s attention.

The fact it had worked only made the story more painful for him.

Chris and producer Will admitted parts of the recording had simply been too much for the normal afternoon show.

That was exactly why the Friday podcast existed.

Friday Extra also looked behind the programme

Chris used the episode to explain how the team edited features such as Where Do You Think They Were? for daytime Radio 1 and why some audio survived only in the podcast.

He and producer Will also talked about things which had happened during the week but never fitted into the live show.

One of those was Scott revealing he had somehow never had a Happy Meal.

Chris decided that had to be corrected on Monday.

The programme would buy Scott the full experience, including the toy.

For Chris, it was another bizarre fact about somebody he had known for years which he could not believe had taken so long to emerge.

The Friday show had found its 2019 purpose

The Extra Show had already evolved during 2018 from a fifth-podcast joke into a genuine companion programme.

This first February edition confirmed the pattern for 2019.

Weekday Radio 1 created the big listener moments.

Friday could provide the uncensored aftermath, production detail and the extra family embarrassment which had been removed before transmission.
