16 April 2018: Brogan went to IKEA on a date, then got ghosted

Chris’s football photo became a watch review

Chris had spent the weekend filming in Portugal and Spain for a BBC iPlayer project.

Part of the trip involved meeting Ricardo, the former Portugal goalkeeper Chris remembered extremely well because Portugal had helped knock England out of major tournaments.

Chris managed to get a photograph with him.

He expected football fans to notice the international goalkeeper.

Instagram noticed Chris’s watch.

The strap had come loose just as the photograph was taken, making the watch look enormous on his wrist. The comments quickly filled with people telling him it was too big, suggesting links needed removing and comparing it with a child wearing his dad’s watch.

One listener called it a “Del Boy special”.

Scott immediately classed it as another Chris Stark jewellery fail, recalling an older photograph with Pink where Chris’s necklace had become the distracting part of the picture.

Chris was exasperated. He had a photograph with somebody he regarded as a football legend and people were discussing nothing except the fit of his watch.

Brogan had been on eight dates

Monday also meant Ghostbusters.

Brogan had been seeing a man throughout January.

This was not a case of two messages on an app followed by silence. They had been on around eight dates.

The dates included afternoon tea.

They had also gone to IKEA together.

Scott considered that last detail decisive.

“You don’t take someone to IKEA and then ghost them” became his basic argument. To him, wandering around the furniture displays together suggested a level of familiarity which made simply disappearing afterwards particularly unreasonable.

Brogan said she was still wound up by what had happened even though the ghosting had taken place at the end of January.

She had been able to see that messages were being received, but the replies stopped.

Ghostbusters reached voicemail

Scott and Chris gathered enough information to call the man.

The first attempt went straight to voicemail.

They tried to interpret what an instant answerphone meant. Had he turned the phone off? Was he already listening to a message? Had he simply lost signal?

None of those possibilities gave Brogan an explanation.

Asked what she would say if he answered, she wanted straightforward honesty. If he had stopped feeling it, she would rather he had simply told her.

Scott pushed Brogan to identify something she had not liked about him. She struggled, eventually suggesting that he probably thought he was funnier than he actually was.

The man still did not answer.

Normally that might have been the end of the story.

Instead, his best friend was listening.
