20 December 2018: Sam discovered oysters and Jim Davidson led to his conception

Radio 1 delivered the young-carers party

Scott had spent the morning in South Oxfordshire for Greg James’s Christmas party for young carers.

The project had grown from a Breakfast Show idea into an enormous listener-built event.

Businesses and members of the public supplied food, sweets, donuts, decorations, trees, party bags and attractions.

A huge Christmas tree required serious effort simply to move into position.

There was a light-up dance floor and an enchanted-forest-style area.

Scott finally brought back the crab from his Strictly days.

For the young carers, the surprise was that the community space they already knew had been transformed completely.

Scott sounded genuinely moved by the reaction.

Eyal read Dickens and then got the train home

Former *Love Island* contestant Eyal Booker was also part of the morning.

He read from *A Christmas Carol*.

Scott and Matt Edmondson then travelled back towards London with him.

Scott said walking through a train carriage beside Eyal gave him an unusual insight into what it was like to be exceptionally good-looking and recognisable.

People stared.

Men and women reacted.

Eyal appeared completely used to it.

Scott and Matt privately panicked whenever Eyal went to the toilet because they needed to make sure they still had enough conversation topics for when he returned.

The train journey itself became another small Radio 1 social experiment.

Sam’s dad Peter was ready to tell everything

The final regular Where Do You Think They Were? of the pre-Christmas run featured Sam and his father Peter.

The story went back to March 1996.

Peter and Sam’s mother travelled to London and stayed with friends in Twickenham.

Their hosts had tickets to see comedian Jim Davidson at a dinner-and-show venue.

Before the performance, there was a meal.

Sam’s mother ordered oysters.

The table also had Sancerre.

Scott and Chris immediately knew the feature had found its recurring aphrodisiac joke.

Comedy, wine and Bri-Nylon sheets

After the show, the group went back to Twickenham.

Andy Williams was put on.

“You’re Just Too Good to Be True” helped establish the mood.

Then Peter remembered the bed.

It had Bri-Nylon sheets.

That happened to connect with a joke Jim Davidson had made during the evening, which made the discovery hilariously appropriate to the adults involved.

For Sam, hearing his parents laugh about bedding and static electricity was significantly less enjoyable.

Peter described the evening as a combination of Sancerre, oysters, comedy, music and the bedsheets.

Scott summarised the crescendo much more vividly than Sam wanted.

Sam admitted afterwards that he felt slightly sick.

Scott blamed the oysters.

The birthday montage finally arrived

After enduring the story, Sam received the usual epic Radio 1 birthday message.

He had volunteered because he thought the feature made funny radio.

Scott thanked him for taking one for the team.

The programme had ended the year’s regular conception stories with exactly the kind of detail which had made Where Do You Think They Were? one of 2018’s defining features.

One blind listener wanted to smell the show

The fragrance competition also produced one of the more thoughtful pitches.

A blind listener explained that she could not experience the programme visually and loved the idea of having a smell associated with Scott and Chris.

The show’s homemade perfume could give her another sensory connection with it.

Scott and Chris recognised that this was considerably stronger than the pitches about sewage smells and engagement-ring tactics.

The unique bottle was almost ready to leave Radio 1.
