19 December 2018: Scott apologised to Cliff Richard fans as the team Christmas party found a belly dancer

Cliff Richard fans wanted justice

Scott’s decision to stop “Mistletoe and Wine” halfway through had produced complaints.

One listener accused him of disrespecting a beautiful record.

Another pointed to Cliff Richard’s long chart career and questioned why Radio 1 should dismiss him.

Scott accepted that cutting the song in the middle had been provocative.

His solution was magnificently petty.

Radio 1 played the remaining one minute and 15 seconds.

Not the whole song again.

Just the exact portion Scott had removed.

Scott presented it as an official apology.

Chris knew this would probably create complaints from the people who did not want to hear Cliff at all.

He was right.

David Guetta’s French noises became a feature

The previous day’s David Guetta interview had also left behind a small archive of unmistakably French noises and turns of phrase.

Scott and Chris edited them together into a montage.

David had also left a roll-neck jumper behind in the studio.

For a while, Scott considered whether the show could keep it and investigate what fragrance the world-famous DJ actually wore.

The jumper was eventually returned.

David Guetta left with his clothes.

Radio 1 kept the audio.

Greg’s party had a light-up dance floor

The young-carers Christmas party was now almost ready.

The venue had been transformed with trees, sweets, decorations and a light-up dance floor.

Scott was expected to perform his crab routine from Strictly.

He had asked Joanne Clifton for emergency help relearning it.

Greg’s team wanted the full routine, not one quick sideways scuttle.

Scott admitted he could remember the embarrassment much more clearly than the steps.

The following morning he would have to do it anyway.

The Scott Mills team party nearly had no entertainment

Scott and Chris had also had their own Christmas night out.

The original restaurant was supposed to include live entertainment.

When the team arrived, there was none.

Scott thought the food was enough.

Chris did not.

He had expected the full experience.

He began phoning other places while everybody was already out.

The operation became, in their words, like an *Apprentice* task.

The group loaded into cars and moved to another venue.

There they found the entertainment Chris wanted: a Lebanese singer and a 55-year-old belly dancer.

Scott accepted that Chris had rescued the evening.

It was not an obvious British Christmas party.

That was exactly why they loved it.

The fragrance pitches became increasingly desperate

The only bottle of the show’s perfume still needed an owner.

Even Sophie, whose original complaint about celebrity fragrance adverts had helped start the entire idea, was made to pitch for it.

Scott refused to give it to her simply because she had been there at the beginning.

Another caller tried to improve his chances by saying he had bought an engagement ring and needed perfume as the accompanying present.

Scott and Chris were suspicious that he was using a proposal to win a Radio 1 competition.

The perfume had become almost as difficult to award as Chris’s imaginary company trophies.

The final Bamboleo before Christmas

Bamboleo Wednesday returned for its last festive appearance of the year.

Listeners supplied old show clips for the instrumental break.

The programme had spent 2018 turning tiny pieces of old audio into recurring traditions.

A festive Bamboleo felt like the right way to begin winding the year down.
