19 October 2018: Chris finally explained how he met Scott Mills

Friday Extra Show: Radio 1 returned from the ARIAs

Extra podcast edition

Chris recorded Friday’s extra show while people across Radio 1 slowly returned from the radio-industry awards in Leeds.

The station had done well, including Radio 1 being recognised as Station of the Year.

Chris’s immediate concern was more personal.

Why had the Scott Mills show not been nominated?

He complained theatrically before moving on to the actual purpose of the podcast: resolving unfinished business from the week and answering listeners’ questions.

Zach finally got the song out of his head

Earlier in the week, listener Zach had known the tune of a song but could not identify it.

He had attempted to sing the melody to Scott and Chris and asked listeners for help.

The Friday podcast returned to the problem so he could finally be told what everybody had worked out.

Chris liked these follow-ups because live radio often created a story and then moved on before the caller heard the ending.

The extra show could complete it.

Good News Jamie went looking for businesses

Good News Jamie had been set homework.

Find more Funny Business candidates while travelling around for work.

He took it very seriously.

One sign which caught his attention was Bona International.

Another was a hairdresser called Curl Up and Dye.

Chris thought Jamie’s enthusiasm was almost more valuable than the businesses themselves.

He had become one of those listeners who could be given an absurd assignment and genuinely spend the week doing it.

Chris explained how he first met Scott

A listener asked one of the questions people had apparently wondered about for years.

How had Chris and Scott actually met?

Chris said they had emailed before meeting in person.

The proper first meeting happened in Southampton.

Chris was resident DJ at a nightclub.

Scott had been booked to DJ on the same night.

Scott’s agent had also been helping Chris with something, so the booking created an obvious chance to finally meet.

They had drinks, got on well and stayed in touch.

The friendship developed from there.

Everything which later became Radio 1 history began with two DJs sharing a nightclub booking in Southampton.

Chris described Scott away from the microphone

The questions also gave Chris space to say things about Scott which rarely fitted the normal show.

He described Scott as extremely generous, particularly with practical help and travel advice.

Scott loved planning trips and helping other people work out where to go.

Chris joked about Scott forgetting his wallet but admitted he exaggerated how often it really happened.

A later caller told Chris that hearing him speak passionately about work had encouraged him to reconsider his own career and return to working with children.

Chris talked openly about luck, career uncertainty and the feeling that even successful people could experience something like imposter syndrome.

The Friday Extra Show had started as a bonus podcast for laughs.

This edition ended up preserving one of the most useful pieces of the show’s own history: how Chris Stark met Scott Mills in the first place.
