Pleasure at the hairdressers
Ahead of Britney Spears’s visit, Chris asks whether it is acceptable to close his eyes during a salon head massage. In an unfamiliar hairdresser he briefly enjoys the shampoo before remembering that a stranger is touching him and reopening one eye.
Scott says the massage is part of the service and should be enjoyed, but draws the line at Chris groaning to reassure the worker that they are doing a good job. Chris previously used the same technique during a full-body massage and now proposes testing it during his next haircut.
Britney adjusts to London
Britney arrives after a London performance complicated by jet lag and a smaller setup than her Las Vegas residency. The British audience seemed more alert and less intoxicated than a Vegas crowd, making her unexpectedly nervous despite years of experience.
Eight costume changes require a Formula One-style team, and Britney occasionally reaches the stage only just in time. She abandons a back walkover when a new, more muscular dancer tries to support her because she trusts the regular partner who has caught her for three years. She would never repeat the famous VMA performance with a python now, explaining that she was already frightened of snakes but felt fearless enough to do it then.
Britney discusses her sons’ pranks and magic tricks, the chart performance of Glory, quiet nights and restaurants in Las Vegas, and her awareness of record sales. She even considers the vacant Great British Bake Off role after revealing that she enjoys cooking.
Three regional Britney voices
After using a theatrical London accent on stage, Britney attempts lines supplied by listeners from Wakefield, Scotland and Birmingham. Her Wakefield delivery is convincing enough for a future Yorkshire concert, but she abandons the Scottish and Birmingham versions almost immediately.
Scott turns the least successful attempt into a new sound effect. For Chris, simply meeting an artist he admired as a teenager is the day’s defining achievement, and his nerves disappear once the warm, wide-ranging interview begins.
