18 August 2015: Carol Kirkwood joins Strictly and asks Scott for help

Zayn versus Calvin

Breakfast began with the social-media argument between Zayn Malik and Calvin Harris. A post about artists, streaming and payment had escalated into direct replies, swearing and an insult about dentures.

Scott and Chris knew that Calvin was unlikely to win a public numbers contest against any current or former member of One Direction. Zayn’s enormous audience could turn every response into a landslide of favourites and retweets, regardless of the original point.

The item also pushed Scott closer to the American newsreader who had walked out over Kardashian coverage. He still cared about the argument, but could feel the possibility of a future morning when another celebrity exchange became the story that finally tipped him over the edge.

Demi Lovato calls

Demi Lovato discussed Cool for the Summer, allowing listeners to decide the exact meaning of its forbidden romance. She had trained hard for the video and described exercise as her replacement for meditation, something that helped her state of mind as much as her appearance.

She confirmed that she expected to be a bridesmaid at Iggy Azalea’s wedding, although there had not yet been a dress fitting. Demi also advised Nick Grimshaw, preparing to judge The X Factor, to answer Simon Cowell back and treat him like any other grumpy older man.

Scott’s attempt to obtain exam advice was less productive because Demi had graduated at 16 after studying while already working. As with Selena Gomez the previous week, Scott placed her on hold for an on-air discussion with Chris before deciding that the interview had reached its natural end.

Carol is ready to dance

BBC weather presenter Carol Kirkwood had just been announced for Strictly Come Dancing. She felt excited and terrified, and expected two left feet to become a serious issue once training began.

Scott offered first-hand support, including late-night messages whenever Carol panicked about a routine. Chris remembered how intimidating the studio became once the introductory film ended and the music began, while Scott warned that the publicity shoot would ask her to pose as a dancer before she had received any training.

Carol wanted Scott and Chris in the audience with banners and badges. She became their immediate favourite, while the transcript repeatedly replaced her with Sarah Jayne Dunn and Demi with unrelated names. The programme itself identifies both women clearly.
