Grimmy discovers he mentioned One Direction 60 times in a week
Nick Grimshaw’s final day covering Scott began with a practical problem: he had agreed to DJ in Lincoln and Leeds but had not finished the mixes he had been trying to make since ten that morning. Grimmy’s confidence lay in his song choices rather than his mixing, and he reasoned that an Emeli Sandé compilation played twice would probably be enough to see him through. Beccy, naturally, was less convinced that a few hours’ preparation was a route to becoming a DJ.
He had already DJed at a friend’s small shop party the previous night, despite initially wanting to stay in and watch Billy Connolly’s Route 66. Having forgotten his CDs, he made do with whatever he could find on a desk upstairs and was surprised to find that the night had actually been fun. The half-finished mix CDs and a little daytime television were a less productive follow-up, but made for a typically honest Friday diary from Grimmy.
The forthcoming Radio 1 Teen Awards gave him another reason to think about appearances. He was due to host with Mollie King at Wembley and announced a health kick so he would look fresh on stage, immediately undermining it by ordering a toasted cheese-and-pastrami sandwich and crisps. The event’s line-up, including Rizzle Kicks, Cher Lloyd, Cat Deeley, Alan Titchmarsh, Pixie Lott and One Direction, was clearly exciting him more than the proposed gym visits.
That excitement became the day’s main game. The team had listened back through the week to count how many times Grimmy had said “One Direction” or mentioned a member of the band. He tried to bargain down the likely total, while a caller guessed 50 and Grimmy guessed 72. The clips that followed showed him repeatedly discussing the dinner, Harry, Liam, the Teen Awards and his rapidly developing obsession.
The final total was 60 mentions, enough for Grimmy to accept that the team had a case. A further breakdown found that Liam had received far more individual mentions than Louis or Zayn, which Grimmy blamed on Liam having introduced him to people at the One Direction dinner. It was a fitting conclusion to the cover run: a presenter preparing to DJ, promising a health kick he had already postponed, and being publicly confronted with exactly how much he had talked about his favourite band.
