Grimmy’s One Direction dinner leaves him hungover and star-struck
Grimmy came in feeling sick after dinner with One Direction, insisting he was not properly hungover, merely suffering the “suggestion” of one. Beccy tried to put him on nil by mouth, while Grimmy insisted a toasted sandwich was the cure. One bite later, he decided he had probably just confused hunger with illness and was ready to resume broadcasting.
The dinner had followed Cher Lloyd’s joking suggestion that the pair could make money from secret celebrity photographs. Grimmy had gone prepared to take a picture of One Direction for a gossip magazine, then decided it was too harsh once he arrived at the grown-up, fashion-week crowd. He still had to rush home, try on six outfits and attend in a sky-blue suit he disliked.
The table next to him held One Direction and James Corden, who Grimmy said was hugging, smelling and fussing over the band with enthusiasm. Grimmy was delighted to meet all five members, openly admitting that he had become overexcited about their new record and made people in the studio listen to Harry’s part. For all the teasing, he was clearly thrilled to have been included.
Ronnie Wood later came over to speak to the band, creating the show’s most surreal moment. Grimmy stood at the edge of the conversation until Liam Payne finally introduced him, then heard Liam’s account of being unable to use the urinal next to Wood because he was too nervous to say hello while they were both there. Grimmy promoted this immediately to an “exclusive wee news” story.
The team suggested celebrity toilet updates could replace sport or weather in the radio bulletin, an idea Chris was understandably reluctant to endorse. Between One Direction, Ronnie Wood, the naked Dappy rumour Beccy asked about and Grimmy’s imagined tabloid sideline, it was a gloriously overexcited account of an ordinary industry dinner turned into a full afternoon’s entertainment.
