24 March 2022: Radio 1’s Happy Hour transformed Miserable Gavin

Gavin had been prescribed the Happy Hour

A day after Miserable Gavin arrived, Scott and Chris attempted treatment.

They ordered him to listen to the Happy Hour playlist on BBC Sounds, a collection of songs presented as guaranteed mood-lifters.

When Gavin returned, the transformation was ridiculous.

Instead of complaining, he sounded ecstatic and announced that it might be the best day of his life.

Scott and Chris declared the experiment a complete success.

Whether Gavin was genuinely converted or simply leaning into the joke no longer mattered.

The show had got its happy ending.

Occupational hotness became a rating system

A listener then admitted finding Chris attractive and wondered whether the fact he was a DJ was doing some of the work.

That opened a much bigger subject: occupational hotness.

Did certain jobs add points to somebody’s attractiveness?

Holiday reps, people in construction and personal trainers were among the professions thrown into the unofficial market.

Listeners also began suggesting jobs which might reduce the score.

Scott and Chris turned the whole thing into a stock exchange of attractiveness, with occupations apparently capable of moving somebody several points up or down.

Paint colour or indie band returned

The quiz brought back Paint Colour or Indie Band, one of those rounds which works because both categories contain names which sound equally implausible.

It was joined by reversed tracks which the team had to identify.

The programme also briefly considered how dependent everybody had become on their phones, another subject which felt much more serious until Miserable Gavin started sounding euphoric again.
