Back in the afternoon
Scott enjoyed covering Breakfast but was pleased to return to the afternoon, thanking Dev for looking after the programme. The team were travelling to Norwich after the show for Radio 1’s Academy, and Chris treated the train journey with Aled Haydn Jones and colleagues as a school trip that might still become a Monday-night escalation.
The Academy was holding workshops, question-and-answer sessions and live performances ahead of the Big Weekend. Greg James was already broadcasting from Norwich and reported on the day’s film, television and music events.
Scott’s mysterious Twitter archive
Chris discovered that Scott had posted more than 22,000 tweets since joining Twitter. The earliest messages were much less restrained than his newer output, including complaints about London limousines full of “orange girls” and the declaration that Brent Cross felt like 1979.
He had selected the most confusing posts and asked the show’s familiar stand-in voice to read them. Chris insisted the impersonation sounded exactly like Scott, then invited listener Jen to compete with him in reconstructing the forgotten stories behind each message.
Scott could sometimes identify the mood, usually an angry night out or a television programme, but five years had erased many of the details. He also objected to playing a game about his own life when the person beside him had already searched the entire archive for evidence.
More post-break-up reinventions
The strange five minutes after a relationship ends continued from Friday. Listeners described dramatic new plans that briefly felt essential, while former producer Beccy recalled her own response to a break-up.
Scott concluded that friends normally recognised the phase and waited for it to pass rather than confronting the person. The activities, new music and impulsive decisions were less a reinvention than a temporary performance of being completely fine.
Greg reports from Norwich
Greg played Real or No Real from the Academy. The facts drew on the sessions taking place around him, including the practicalities of filming outdoor scenes and details revealed by the EastEnders team.
Scott won 20 points to Greg’s 10. He finished by promoting the following day’s live Norwich show, where Leona Lewis and a large group of Academy visitors were due to turn Innuendo Bingo into something much closer to an arena production.
