A healthy first birthday and a solitary studio
Scott was presenting without Chris, who was recording Virtually Famous. He had recently attended the first birthday of his friend Lauren’s son Alfie and had been surprised by a children’s party stocked with cucumber, grapes and other healthy food rather than the expected pile of sweets.
The previous evening’s Union J video and Nick Grimshaw’s earlier Innuendo Bingo appearance were still attracting viewers. Scott wondered whether Sam Smith had now become too famous to play, a question that treated being sprayed with water as a measurable stage in a pop career.
Rochan sends the message
Rochan’s encounter with The Saturdays had not disappeared. Vanessa White still followed him online, while Rochan pointed out that he was in a happy relationship and was known to enjoy spa days.
Listeners combined those details into a message: “Rochan’s gone red, your eyes are blue. Fancy a drink or a spa day for two?” Under pressure from Scott, he posted it publicly to Vanessa. The prank had therefore progressed from a controlled studio experiment to a real notification on a pop star’s phone.
Rochan’s embarrassment became part of the entertainment, but his original professionalism remained intact. Even when Vanessa had sat on the desk and invited him backstage, he had continued trying to record facts for a radio quiz.
The many Chocolates of The 1975
Scott assembled a mock deluxe collection of The 1975 performing “Chocolate” across the BBC. The supposed album included appearances at Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Derry-Londonderry and Glasgow, G in the Park, Reading, Glastonbury’s Pyramid and Other stages, and sessions associated with Zane Lowe and Huw Stephens.
The compilation came with the exaggerated reverence of a heritage release, plus a bonus version from Grimmy’s school tour. After Matty Healy’s visit to Greg’s tent, “Chocolate” had become the unofficial sound of Radio 1’s summer.
Scott warns against the front row
Chris’s panel-show recording featured Kevin McHale, Jeremy Vine and Emily Atack. Scott advised the team not to sit in the front row, where warm-up comedians could easily select them as targets before filming had even begun.
He illustrated the danger with stories of audience members who had tried to look invisible and instead supplied a comedian with an entire routine. The warning was useful but late: Chris was already working on a programme in which public embarrassment was a central resource.
Muff returns to The Hotel Inspector
The Hotel Inspector Returns revisited a Newquay hotel owner named Muff. The programme said her name 43 times, producing an immediate flood of messages to the show. No extra editing was required; conventional television narration had created a complete Innuendo Bingo reel by itself.
Dev wins the final round
Dev played Real or No Real. A wartime South African plan really had considered dropping poisonous snakes on enemy troops. Chris Martin had travelled on the Tube to the O2 without being recognised. Geri Halliwell had not used a Magic 8 Ball to decide whether the Spice Girls should reunite, while Yahoo really had begun as “Jerry and David’s Guide to the World Wide Web”.
Dev finished level overall at 20–20. At G in the Park, Greg had woken to find a snake, and Foxes had needed lyrics on a phone while performing “No Scrubs”. Between snakes, phones and Rochan’s tweet, the week ended with everybody watching a screen for the next problem.
