8 September 2008: Greg James chased Usain Bolt’s record as Dear Scott investigated John Simm

Dear Scott investigated a motorway-services encounter

Listener Pete believed he had met actor John Simm in the toilets at the M6 Toll services. The awkward detail was that he had offered a handshake immediately afterwards and had noticed the man did not wash his hands first. The team could not establish beyond doubt whether it really was John Simm, but the hygiene detail ensured the story survived regardless.

Greg James tried to become Usain Bolt

With Usain Bolt’s sprinting achievements still dominating conversation, Greg James was sent to run 100 metres and see how his time compared. He managed roughly 17 seconds, a perfectly respectable ordinary-person effort which only emphasised how extraordinary the world-record pace was.

Shaggy, East 17 and a fake Scott rounded out the show

Shaggy phoned listeners with a riddle, while talk of an East 17 reunion and tour brought back another piece of pop history. Dear Scott also heard from a man who claimed to impersonate Scott at weekends in the hope of getting free drinks, proving that being mistaken for a celebrity could apparently be treated as a practical money-saving strategy.
