Scott’s mum had preserved a piece of fitness history
A visit to Scott’s mum revealed an old Peter Powell exercise recording from the 1970s. Scott found the idea of another Radio 1 presenter instructing his mother through a workout faintly disturbing, which naturally made the team even more determined to hear it.
The studio joined the workout
The programme followed the exercise instructions and began questioning whether Peter Powell sounded as though he was actually doing the movements while speaking. That led into comparisons with other celebrity fitness releases and older keep-fit broadcasting, including Eileen Fowler.
The day kept drifting into celebrity oddities
Britney Spears’ mother’s memoir and the unusual memorability of Benedict Cumberbatch’s name also entered the conversation. The fitness recording remained the centrepiece, though, because it offered exactly the combination Scott liked: a genuine piece of Radio 1 history, a family connection and enough dated instruction to make everyone in the studio look ridiculous while attempting it.
